Periodic and Weekly University Emails Archive

Good Afternoon Faculty and Staff,

I hope everyone had a great end to the academic year. As much as we would all love to leave the pandemic behind us, we are continuing to have COVID issues at both campuses. Since June 1st, we have had 29 employees who were either symptomatic or exposed to COVID, and 15 COVID-positive results among employees. I wanted to take a moment to review our current Oregon Tech COVID protocols, now that we’ve moved into summer.

Oregon OSHA continues to require notification to employees who have “closer contact” (within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more, cumulative across 24 hours) with a COVID-positive person at the workplace and to notify those who have “passing contact” (less than 6 feet or less than 15 minutes). You may have received these notifications this past year, noted as an “Exposure Notice” and “Affected Notice”, respectively. We are required to provide these notices to employees within 24 hours of learning about the COVID-positive person who was on campus. Because Oregon OSHA as not yet rescinded this requirement, Oregon Tech will continue to perform contact tracing for both students and employees. The Integrated Student Health Center (541-885-1800) will continue to be the point of contact for all COVID-related issues.

  • If you test positive for COVID, please contact the Integrated Student Health Center immediately to discuss your timeline for return and to engage in the contact tracing process. If you test positive on a home-kit or rapid test, that is sufficient; there is no need to confirm with a PCR test.

  • If you are exposed to someone with COVID, please contact the Integrated Student Health Center immediately to discuss your next steps. Whether or not you need to quarantine depends upon your vaccination status, per the current CDC guidelines, which Student Health will review with you.

  • If you are sick, please stay home. If you call in sick, please follow your department guidelines for notifying your supervisor and then contact the Integrated Student Health Center (541-885-1800). You will be given the option of obtaining a Return to Work Letter from your physician or obtaining a PCR COVID test before being cleared to return to work. Please note that you are still required to notify Student Health so that they can provide you proper guidance; Sarah from Human Resources is helping to work with ill employees, so the Student Health Center will take your information while Sarah may follow-up.

If you are a faculty member teaching in person summer courses, please review this protocol and expectations with your students. If you have summer student employees, please review this protocol and expectations with them.

We will review these protocols prior to the Fall term, taking into consideration any changes on behalf of Oregon OSHA and other national and state guidance. If you have any questions about current employee COVID protocols, please contact Sandi Hanan in Human Resources (541-885-1074).

Enjoy your summer, but please continue to be diligent in your efforts to remain safe and healthy.

Thanks,
Erin

Oregon Tech Community,

Welcome to spring term!

As you are aware, there have been several changes recently with regards to COVID guidance from both the CDC and OHA. I am writing today to explain how these changes impact our processes here at Oregon Tech. The following applies to all members of the campus community, both students and employees.

Things that have changed at Oregon Tech

  • Face coverings are now optional at all campuses, with the exception of healthcare services (including the ABA clinic, the Dental clinic, and ISHC)
  • Weekly testing has been suspended indefinitely

Things that have remained the same at Oregon Tech

  • If you are having any symptom that is unusual for you, stay home and do not come to campus/class.
  • Contact Student Health if you 1) have any symptoms, 2) have had an exposure to a COVID-positive person, or 3) have tested positive for COVID (541-885-1800).
  • Student Health will continue to conduct contact tracing for both students and employees, so you may be asked to quarantine or isolate depending upon your situation.
  • Faculty will continue to be notified if a student will be missing class/labs for a COVID-related reason. As before, they will not be given specific details, but will be provided with an estimated range of dates for the absence.
  • Employees will continue to receive Affected Notices (if they may have had passing contact with a COVID-positive person while at the workplace) or Exposure Notices (if they had close contact with a COVID-positive person while at the workplace). Oregon OSHA continues to require that these be sent within 24 hours or our learning of the potential exposure, so please cooperate with Student Health if you are contacted so we can send the notices in a timely manner.
  • The COVID vaccine requirement remains in place for the Spring term - please see the website here:  https://www.oit.edu/coronavirus/vaccination-requirement for more details.

As we have encouraged throughout the pandemic, please continue to make healthy choices so that we can minimize the impact on the campus community - maintain physical distancing when possible, cover your cough/sneeze, wash your hands regularly, and if you do not feel well, stay home and contact Student Health.

If you have any questions about the impact of the COVID guidance changes, you can contact:

Dr. Erin Foley  (541-885-1011)- with questions about protocol and COVID response

Sandi Hanan (541-885-1074) - with questions about employee-related issues

Sarah Henderson-Wong (541-884-1028) - with questions about employee COVID leave

Gaylyn Maurer (541-885-1800)- with questions about symptoms, exposure, or contact tracing

Happy spring term!
Stay well,
Erin

Oregon Tech Community,

Congratulations for making it through winter term as it was a challenge on the COVID front!

As of today, the campus face covering requirement expired. Now it is an individual decision to wear a mask and everyone should be supportive of each person's decision. Wear a mask if you have underlying medical conditions or live with someone who does. Also, the weekly COVID testing requirement is suspended indefinitely now.  COVID testing is no longer required for unvaccinated students and employees on campus.

COVID, however, is not gone and it is possible that a new variant could arise that prompts campus requirements to return or operations to be adjusted again.  Of course, any changes to COVID requirements or operations will be communicated to the campus community.  In the meantime, anyone with symptoms should continue to call Student Health at 541-885-1800 for instructions.

Although the COVID numbers are much lower this week, several cases of enterovirus, norovirus, and flu on campus have been reported. These viruses have similar symptoms to COVID so the expectation of staying home and calling Student Health at 541-885-1800 remains in place for all students, faculty, and staff members.

Please stay up to date with your COVID vaccinations per the CDC guidance which now includes the booster.

Reminders

Spring term starts Monday, March 28!

I’m suspending these weekly Saturday emails. If the COVID landscape changes, I will communicate any changes to campus requirements and operations.

Enjoy your spring break and stay safe and well,

Oregon Tech Community,

Dead Week is over and only Finals Week remains! Hang in there -- the end of the term is in sight!

As announced on Wednesday, the campus mask mandate will end at the conclusion of winter term.  Please wear a mask through Friday of next week. Upon the start of spring, it is an individual decision to wear a mask and everyone should be supportive of each person's decision.

Taking actions to protect yourself is still strongly encouraged: get vaccinated (or boosted), wear a mask if you have underlying medical conditions or live with someone who does, and wash your hands regularly.

Although the COVID numbers are much lower this week, cases of enterovirus, norovirus, and flu on campus have been reported. These viruses have similar symptoms to COVID so the expectation of staying home and calling Student Health at 541-885-1800 remains in place for all students, faculty, and staff members.

COVID numbers

Since last week’s update, there are 5 new positive cases (all KF students; down from 11 new cases last week) for a total of 393 reported cases since January 3. Currently, 3 KF students and 3 employees are in isolation/quarantine.  The numbers in isolation/quarantine are down from a total of 19 last week to 6 currently.

Mandatory testing of unvaccinated students and employees will be suspended indefinitely starting the week of March 21.  A weekly test is still needed next week (submit by noon on Tuesday).

Please stay up to date with your COVID vaccinations per the CDC guidance which now includes the booster.

Reminders

Please remember to set your clocks forward one hour Saturday night for the start of daylight savings time.

Good luck on final exams and then enjoy your spring break!

Stay well,
Erin

Dear Oregon Tech Community Members,

Earlier in February, Oregon health officials announced that Oregon will be rescinding the state’s indoor mask requirements beginning on March 12.

Based upon this information, Oregon Tech is lifting our campus mask mandate at the end of winter term, with masks no longer required beginning March 19. Based on information from OHA, this applies to all university students, faculty, staff, and visitors regardless of vaccination status. Please see the attached FAQs.

While Oregon Tech will no longer require masks, it is important that our campus community recognizes that it is now an individual choice to continue to wear a mask and those individuals should be free from judgment and criticism. Anyone may choose to wear a mask for any reason. Individuals are strongly encouraged to continue to wear a mask if they are unvaccinated, immunocompromised, have underlying medical conditions that put them at higher risk of complications, are 65 or older, or live with someone in one of those categories. All should be positively supported by all campus members. Masks will continue to available around campus. OHA still requires masks in healthcare settings which includes the Student Health Center, Dental Clinic, and ABA Clinic.

We will continue to remind everyone to follow COVID precautions, including washing your hands frequently, monitoring your health and symptoms. Please also continue to contact Student Health at 541-885-1800 if you have symptoms (any symptoms, not just COVID), an exposure, or test positive for COVID. Please stay home if you are not well.

If a new COVID variant emerges, Oregon Tech may need to respond with new requirements for our community.

Thank you for supporting our COVID response efforts.

Stay well,
Erin

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

As the end of winter term approaches, COVID is still lingering as the case numbers below show an increase in cases and quarantines/isolations over the numbers from last week.  Numbers are much better than earlier in the term, however, but need to still make good decisions and limit exposures and spread.

As you have likely heard, OHA moved the end of the indoor mask mandate from March 19 to March 11.  Any change to the campus requirement will be announced by the end of next week but will not likely go into effect until winter term ends. Until then, face coverings are still required indoors.

Taking actions to protect yourself is still strongly encouraged: get vaccinated (or boosted), wear a mask if you have underlying medical conditions or live with someone who does, wash your hands regularly.

As the situation continues to improve, please say home if you are not well. Although sharing is usually a good thing, nobody wants you to share germs (COVID, flu, cold, mononucleosis, etc.) Please continue to call Student Health at 541-885-1800 if you have symptoms, test positive, or have an exposure, and do not come to campus. Please contact Student Health of a positive COVID test result immediately (this includes everyone – students, faculty and staff) so contact tracing can be done quickly to limit further exposures.

COVID numbers

Since last week’s update, there are 11 new positive cases (6 KF students, 2 PM students, and 3 employees; up from 7 new cases last week) for a total of 388 reported cases since January 3. Currently, 11 KF students, 1 PM student, and 7 employees are in isolation/quarantine.  The numbers in isolation/quarantine are up from a total of 15 last week to 19 currently.

To reduce the spread, it is critical that you remember to do your Daily Health Screening before coming to campus. Please remember that if you have symptoms, an exposure to someone that is COVID positive, or if you test positive, you should NOT come to campus and contact Student Health immediately at 541-885-1800 (regardless of your campus location). We have had people come to campus that should not, which resulted in others now in isolation.

Please stay up to date with your COVID vaccinations per the CDC guidance which now includes the booster.

Reminders

If you are required to do the weekly COVID test, tests are due Tuesdays by noon (no tests will be accepted after 12:00pm). Please label the vial with your full name and date of birth (and enter the barcode) or your test will not be processed per the lab.

Dead Week is here – please take care of yourselves as you work to complete the term’s projects, papers, labs, and prepare for finals.  As you gather in study groups or to finish projects with teammates, please wear a mask and maintain distancing as much as possible.  You don’t want to get sick for finals week. Finish strong!

Stay well,
Erin

Oregon Tech Community,

We are now quickly approaching the end of winter term with the completion of week 8, with only 3 weeks remaining. The COVID numbers are down for another consecutive week and the impact continues to decrease. As I mentioned last week, OHA announced the indoor mask mandate would be dropped no later than March 31.  Earlier this week the date was moved up to March 19.  Plans for spring term will be announced to the university community no later than March 16.

Since last week’s update, there are 7 new positive cases (3 KF students, 2 PM students, and 2 employees; down from 16 new cases last week) for a total of 377 reported cases since January 3. Currently, 5 KF students, 2 PM student, and 6 employees are in isolation/quarantine (another 2 students had exposures but are not having to isolate because of vaccination).  The numbers in isolation/quarantine are down from a total of 16 last week to 13 currently, which is now five consecutive weeks with weekly decreases since the beginning of winter term.

Reminders

Continue to regularly practice the COVID prevention measures: wear a mask, wash hands frequently, physical distance when possible, and stay home if you have any symptoms.  Please practice these prevention measures off campus as well.  Social gatherings, activities, study groups, and so on are the primary sources for transmission.

If you are required to do the weekly COVID test, tests are due Tuesdays by noon (no tests will be accepted after 12:00pm). Please label the vial with your full name and date of birth (and enter the barcode) or your test will not be processed per the lab.

Oregon Tech Community,

The end of week 6 of winter term means we are now on the downhill side of the academic year and June will be here before we know it.  As with numbers around the state and country, the Omicron surge is lessening for us but we still must be diligent.

It is imperative that each of us call Student Health at 541-885-1800 if we have symptoms, test positive, or have an exposure. Student Health is learning about classmates, roommates, instructors, co-workers, etc. that the other person is positive instead of hearing from the person directly. We are having success in quarantining/isolating people before they get a positive test result which helps mitigate further exposures and spread.  Please do not come to campus and call Student Health if you have symptoms (it might not be just a “cold”). Please contact Student Health of a positive COVID test result immediately (this includes everyone – students, faculty and staff) so contact tracing can be done quickly to limit further exposures.

COVID numbers

Since last week’s update, there are 30 new positive cases (18 KF students, 4 PM students, and 8 employees; down from 49 new cases last week) for a total of 354 reported cases since January 3. Currently, 9 KF students, 3 PM students, 2 Salem students, and 6 employees are in isolation/quarantine (another 12 students had exposures but are not having to isolate because of vaccination).  The numbers in isolation/quarantine are down from a total of 96 last week to 32 currently, which is now three consecutive weeks with weekly decreases since January 3.

Oregon Tech Community,

The weeks are flying by and week 7 is now in the books. The COVID numbers are down for another consecutive week and the impact on campus is less (since the middle of November) which is certainly welcomed.  As numbers decrease across the state and country, guidance and mandates are also changing once again. Questions are being asked about what impact OHA’s announcement to eliminate the indoor mask mandate no later than March 31 will have for the university.  As we have done throughout the pandemic, guidance from the CDC, OHA, and local public health authorities will be reviewed to determine if any changes will be made for Oregon Tech.  If any changes are determined, the changes will not go into effect until the start of spring term and will be communicated prior to the end of this term.

Although it appears the worst of the Omicron surge is behind us, it is imperative we all continue to stay home if we are not 100% well.  Please continue to call Student Health at 541-885-1800 if you have symptoms, test positive, or have an exposure, and do not come to campus. Please contact Student Health of a positive COVID test result immediately (this includes everyone – students, faculty and staff) so contact tracing can be done quickly to limit further exposures.

COVID numbers

Since last week’s update, there are 16 new positive cases (10 KF students, 1 PM students, 2 Salem students, and 3 employees; down from 30 new cases last week) for a total of 370 reported cases since January 3. Currently, 9 KF students, 1 PM student, 1 Salem student, and 2 employees are in isolation/quarantine (another 3 students had exposures but are not having to isolate because of vaccination).  The numbers in isolation/quarantine are down from a total of 32 last week to 13 currently, which is now four consecutive weeks with weekly decreases since January 3.

Monday is President’s Day but it is not a recognized campus holiday so it is just another Monday and business as usual for Oregon Tech.

Oregon Tech Community,

Week 5 is in the books which means midterm exams are in progress as we continue to manage the current omicron surge.  The number of positive cases for this week decreased for the second consecutive week. We still have, however, individuals coming to campus with symptoms which potentially results in exposures for others; COVID symptoms are very similar to head colds – congestion, runny nose, sore throat – so please stay home if you are not well.

COVID numbers

Since last week’s update, there are 49 new positive cases (31 KF students, 5 PM students, 2 Salem students, and 11employees; down from 62 new cases last week) for a total of 324 reported cases since January 3. Currently, 38 KF students, 8 PM students, 3 Salem students, and 18 employees are in isolation/quarantine (another 29 students had exposures but are not having to isolate because of vaccination).  The numbers in isolation/quarantine are down from a total of 115 last week to 96 currently, which is now two consecutive weeks with weekly decreases since January 3.

To reduce the spread, it is critical that you remember to do your Daily Health Screening before coming to campus. We have had people come to campus that should not, which resulted in others now in isolation.

Please see the attachment for information about isolation and quarantine requirements for positive COVID tests, exposures and symptoms. Please do not determine on your own how long to quarantine – call Student Health for instructions and to work with them on any contact tracing issues.

Please stay up to date with your COVID vaccinations per the CDC guidance which now includes the booster.

Oregon Tech Community,

We made it through week 4 of the term while still managing through the current omicron surge. While classroom and lab transmissions remain extremely low, the positive cases and exposures are still occurring at a high rate. As we continue with this surge for the next couple of weeks, it is imperative that we all continue to regularly practice the COVID prevention measures: wear a mask, wash hands frequently, physical distance when possible, and stay home if you have any symptoms.  Please practice these prevention measures off campus as well.  Social gatherings, activities, study groups, and so on are the primary sources for transmission.

It is imperative that each of us call Student Health at 541-885-1800 if we have symptoms, test positive, or have an exposure. Student Health is learning about classmates, roommates, instructors, co-workers, etc. that the other person is positive instead of hearing from the person directly. Since last week’s update, there are 62 new positive cases (42 KF students, 6 PM students, 2 Salem students, and 12 employees; down from 95 new cases last week) for a total of 275 reported cases since January 3. Currently, 62 KF students, 5 PM students, 3 Salem students, and 12 employees are in isolation/quarantine (another 33 students had exposures but are not having to isolate because of vaccination).  The numbers in isolation/quarantine are down from a total of 207 last week to 115 currently, which is the first weekly decrease since January 3.

To reduce the spread, it is critical that you remember to do your Daily Health Screening before coming to campus. Week 3 of winter term is over but the Omicron surge is not. This surge is more significant than the Delta surge in terms of numbers but most individuals are not as sick. As we continue with this surge for the next couple of weeks or so, it is imperative that we all continue to regularly practice the COVID prevention measures: wear a mask, wash hands frequently, physical distance when possible, and stay home if you have any symptoms.

It is imperative that each of us call Student Health at 541-885-1800 if we have symptoms, test positive, or have an exposure. Oregon Tech Community,

With week 2 of winter term completed, it is clear that we are experiencing the Omicron surge just like the rest of the country. This surge is more significant than the Delta surge in terms of numbers but most individuals are not as sick.  As we continue with this surge for the next couple of weeks or so, it is imperative that we all continue to regularly practice the COVID prevention measures: wear a mask, wash hands frequently, physical distance when can, stay home if you have any symptoms (it might not be “just a cold”) and call Student Health at 541-885-1800.

I have received several reports about face coverings not worn or not worn properly. I understand we are tired of COVID and the campus requirements, but every individual must continue to do your part daily. The campus requirement remains that face coverings are required for everyone indoors unless actively eating. When you have a beverage, please remove your face covering to take a sip and then replace your face covering. Please be sure to wear your face covering properly (over both your nose and mouth). Also, please consider a multilayer cloth mask, a disposable surgical mask, or a KN95, especially if you have underlying medical issues. Failure to comply with the face covering requirement may result in disciplinary actions.

COVID numbers

Since last week’s update, there are 84 new positive cases (71 KF students, 3 PM students, 3 Salem students, and 7 employees) for a total of 118 reported cases since January 3. Currently, 89 KF students, 14 PM students, 1 Salem student, and 20 employees are in isolation/quarantine (another 39 students had exposures but are not having to isolate because of vaccination).

This week was our first confirmed transmission in a classroom/lab, with many students and faculty having to quarantine as a result.  The best way to reduce the potential for spread is by not coming to class/lab/work if you have symptoms or if you have had an exposure. Employees and students should contact Student Health at 541-885-1800 immediately if you have had an exposure, are symptomatic, or have tested positive (regardless of your campus location).  If you do not get a person when you call, please leave your name and your call back number.

Students, the faculty are working with students have to miss class as a result of COVID-related issues – I continue to email each of the professors to confirm the absence of students who are working with Student Health. If you are missing class because of a COVID-related issue but Student Health isn’t aware of it, I can’t notify faculty members to work with you. Similarly, employees, you have COVID leave at your disposal, so you don’t have to use Sick Leave if you have a COVID-related absence. You will not be “punished” by your supervisor for staying home if you are ill; I’m sure they will appreciate it.

In order to reduce the spread, it is critical that you remember to do your Daily Health Screening before coming to campus. Please remember that if you have symptoms, an exposure to someone that is COVID positive, or if you test positive, you should NOT come to campus and contact Student Health immediately at 541-885-1800 (regardless of your campus location). We have had people come to campus that should not, which resulted in others now in isolation.  Please remember to do your daily health screening prior to coming to campus.

Please see the attachment for information about isolation and quarantine requirements for positive COVID tests, exposures and symptoms.

Please stay up to date with your COVID vaccinations per the CDC guidance which now includes the booster.

Reminders

Monday, January 17 is a recognized campus holiday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  Please consider serving others on Monday or join the Service Week activities Tuesday through Friday.

If you are required to do the weekly COVID test, tests are due Tuesdays by noon (due to the campus holiday, tests can’t be submitted on Monday so be sure to drop the test off Tuesday morning as no tests will be accepted after 12:00pm).

One final reminder, winter is a tough time of year on mental health and with the continued challenges of COVID, please take care of yourself mentally and emotionally. Use your resources and if I can be of any assistance or help with connecting to your resources, please let me know.

Stay well,
Erin

Oregon Tech Community,

Welcome to a new academic term which has not started the way would like as COVID is yet again providing significant challenges. Before I get to this week’s numbers, I want to provide the final fall term numbers: we had a total of 88 reported positive cases for all locations, students and employees. Of those 88 cases, 34 were not vaccinated.  A total of 349 students were isolated (185 due to exposure and 164 due to symptoms) and 94 employees were isolated (47 for exposure and 47 for symptoms).

COVID numbers

Since January 3, there are a total of 34 positive cases (25 KF students, 2 PM students, 1 Salem student, and 6 employees). Currently, 37 KF students, 11 PM students, 2 Salem students and 12 employees are in isolation (another 12 KF students had exposures but are not having to isolate because of vaccination).

We can expect more positive cases and exposures in the coming weeks due to the Omicron variant. Please continue to help us by being mindful of not coming to campus if you are having symptoms (even if you think it’s “just a cold”) or if you have had an exposure. Employees and students should contact Student Health at 541-885-1800 immediately if you have had an exposure, are symptomatic, or have tested positive (regardless of your campus location).

The good news is that the system is working. Out of 11 positive cases on Friday, 6 of the students had already contacted Student Health and were following instructions. As a result, further exposures on campus were greatly minimized. However, at the same time, we have had other students and employees who came to work or class when they have symptoms.

The other good news is that we are not seeing classroom transmission on campus. By reacting quickly and isolating the students and employees who are positive, we have been able to continue limiting person-to-person transmission. This holds true for the residential students, as well. Most of our exposures have been through either family or non-OIT friends (not through classmates or roommates). While the number of positive cases has risen quickly in a short period, please take comfort in the fact that it is not a result of being on campus, either as a student or an employee.

You may have seen the changes that the CDC issued last week which shortened isolation/quarantine times. This change was prompted by data that showed people are most contagious 48 hours before and 48 hours after their first symptom. The Oregon Health Authority has adopted these guidelines, as has Oregon Tech. See attached for a handout that explains the new guidelines; however, our protocol has not changed in that you still need to contact Student Health and they will provide you instruction about your specific COVID-related issue.

You may have also seen an announcement today from the Oregon Health Authority that marks the reduction of contact tracing by the state with regards to the pandemic. Until the recent surge subsides and the impact of the variants begins to lessen, we will continue the contact tracing process for both employees and students.

There are many changes coming from higher levels, but Oregon Tech is going to stay the course – we are committed to keeping our campus community as safe as possible. Help us do that by doing your part. If each of us makes these good decisions, the impact upon all of us will be significantly reduced.

Reminders

If you are required to do the weekly COVID test, tests are due Tuesdays by noon.

Employees: do not email a photo of your vaccination card or booster information to HR.

Face coverings are required for everyone indoors unless actively eating. When you have a beverage, please remove your face covering to take a sip and then replace your face covering. Please be sure to wear your face covering properly (over both your nose and mouth). Reports of noncompliance to wear a face covering properly will be handled through the conduct process for students and staff.

Welcome to the start of winter term.  COVID continues to present new challenges, with the Omicron variant being the latest.  As you may be aware, the CDC released new guidance regarding lengths of quarantine/isolation periods, and has determined that COVID vaccines lose potency after 6 months – as a result, it has become all the more important to obtain a booster for the COVID vaccine. Students, once you have your booster, please go back into the Student Health portal and provide that information as you did for your original vaccines; employees, notify Human Resources.

If you had an exposure over break, have developed symptoms, or have tested positive for COVID, it is really important that you contact Student Health immediately at 541-885-1800. They will help you navigate the new CDC requirements (if you get a recording, leave a message with a call back number).

Below are points (mainly reminders) of what every one of us needs to do in response to COVID:

  • Wear a mask properly when on campus – the mask must be worn snuggly over the nose and mouth; wash masks regularly or use a new disposable one daily
  • Complete your daily health screening for any symptoms; if you have any symptoms DO NOT come to campus (or leave your campus housing room)
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Maintain physically distance from others when possible
  • If you are required to do the weekly COVID test, please get your test submitted by NOON each Tuesday; do not use this test to confirm your symptoms  - if you have symptoms, call Student Health (number above)
  • If you get a positive COVID test (through any testing option), please call Student Health immediately

Please look for the Saturday COVID updates which return this week.

Thanks and stay well,

Erin

Oregon Tech Community,

Congratulations for making it to the end of fall term! We can all use the winter break to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy good times with family and friends.  Please remember that COVID transmission is very high in social gatherings with family and friends and COVID numbers are on the rise.  Please note the next weekly email update will be on Saturday, January 8. Information about campus offices and operations during the winter break: see the two attachments.

COVID numbers

Since the last report, 5 new positive cases were reported (all KF students), bringing the total number of positive cases to 70 since September 27.  Currently in isolation/quarantine are 9 KF students (with an additional 16 waiting for test results), and 4 employees. The 16 waiting for test results are not in isolation because they are vaccinated which follows the CDC guidance.

The number of recorded cases for the Oregon Tech community Fall 2020 was 82, compared to 70 cases this fall term.  More information about this fall term’s COVID cases will be shared in the next weekly update email (January 8).

Reminders

Winter term classes will start January 3 with classes in person. However, our COVID response group will continue to monitor the Omicron variant and information from the CDC and OHA.  As you return to the Basin, please be sure to check weather and road conditions at Trip Check for the latest information for Oregon.

If you are required to do the weekly COVID test, testing will resume again the first week of winter term (tests are due Tuesday by noon, January 4).

Enjoy your winter break and be safe!  Happy New Year, too!

Stay well,
Erin

Oregon Tech Community,

We are almost to the end so keep plugging along for a few more days! Students, good luck on your final exams next week. Faculty, best as you finish up all the grading and getting grades entered. Staff, thanks for your efforts to support students throughout the term.  One more Saturday update will come out next week and then will return on Saturday, January 8.

Winter weather is here with wind, snow and rain over the next few days.  Any announcements regarding campus operations impacted by weather will be sent through the OIT-Alert system and local news outlets. If you have not updated your contact information in the OIT-Alert system, please click here.  As you travel for the break please evaluate weather and road conditions through Trip Check, and be safe out there.

If you are required to do the weekly COVID test, this will be the last week for the term (tests due by noon, Tuesday, December 14) and will resume again the first week of winter term (tests due Tuesday by noon, January 4).

COVID numbers

Since the last report, 4 new positive cases were reported (3 KF students and 1 PM students), bringing the total number of positive cases to 65 since September 27.

Currently in isolation/quarantine are 6 KF students (with an additional 2 waiting for test results), one PM student, and 3 employees. The 2 waiting for test results are not in isolation because they are vaccinated which follows the CDC guidance.

Reminders

Please be sure to register for winter term classes before you start your winter break.

Oregon Tech Community Members,

Oregon recorded the highest case count in a single day yesterday with 2,176 new cases and 30 deaths. It is anticipated that new cases will continue to increase since Thanksgiving was just 9 days ago. We are still months away from a vaccine being available to the general public. Thus, it is imperative that we all continue to minimize close contact with others, keep social gatherings small, wear a face covering, and regularly wash hands.

This week’s COVID-19 numbers

Currently, 18 KF students are in isolation (2 on campus) which is 15 less than last week. Additionally, 7 employees are in isolation (down from 13 last week). There are no reports of anyone in isolation at the PM campus or from Chemeketa.

This week there were 7 new positive KF students, bringing the total to 54 positive students since the start of fall term. Three new positive cases reported for employees. No new positive cases reported from the PM campus or Chemeketa.

Winter Term Information

On Thursday an email was sent to campus (attached) indicating the first two weeks of winter term will be remote for KF. The other campus locations will start winter term with the same operations as fall term. Please watch for additional emails about winter term over the next three weeks.

Reminders

Final exams are this week - good luck! Grades will be available on Tuesday, December 15.

The Oregon Tech Foundation scholarship application is now available (due March 1, but don’t wait to do it – winter break is a great time to write your essays).

As the COVID-19 spread increases, everyone must continue to practice all the precautions regularly: properly wear a face covering inside and outside, maintain 6 feet between you and others, frequently wash your hands, and regularly sanitize high touch surfaces.

The holidays are traditionally a time to enjoy time with family and friends, but we all need to think about doing things differently this year to slow the spread of the virus. Social gatherings are the prime source of transmission, so please make good decisions for the upcoming holidays. Remember, you may be asymptomatic so don’t give grandma or anyone else the virus; maintain at least 6 feet and wear a face covering (even when you are with family members that you think are “safe”).

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community Members,

My apologies for not getting this out earlier today as you many of you have become accustomed to reading with your morning coffee.

Governor Brown’s two week freeze started on Wednesday (to December 2, minimally) which meant we had to institute some changes primarily at the Klamath Falls campus. The aspects of higher education that were announced as exempt include instruction and research; all other functions have to follow the relevant sector guidance. As a result, the TechRec is closed, in person social events are cancelled, and dining is 100% takeout (no seating available in the dining area). These changes are unfortunate but Oregon Tech must comply with the state directives. As part of this statewide guidance, the Governor has stated repeatedly the “urgent importance of limiting social gatherings—especially during the holiday season—and continuing to wear face coverings even when visiting family and friends in small gatherings.” COVID-19 cases have risen on campus recently as they have in the local community and beyond, and Oregon Tech supports the statewide public health regulations issued this week to curtail the spread.

Approximately 630 students are living on campus and buildings are occupied with labs and lower level classes this term. Oregon Tech staff members have kept our buildings and facilities clean and the campus fully accessible. I’m thankful for everyone that is playing a critical role in keeping our campuses safe, healthy and operational. I am gratified to see students and staff observing our safety protocols, and the prevalence of mask wearing — both indoors and outside — has been part of why we’ve been able to conduct fall term as we planned. However, we can’t become lazy in our efforts or we will continue to have increases in our COVID-19 numbers.

This week’s COVID-19 numbers

This week 102 students tested on campus (KF) bringing the total of students tested since September 16 to 255. Man students wanted testing before returning home to family. Of the results in so far, only one came back positive (which we expected due to symptoms).

As I indicated last week, with the increased number of students in isolation, more positive cases were anticipated. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened; the total number of positive cases this week increased by 12 (all students), bringing the total for fall term to 34 students (up from just 8 two weeks ago) and 2 employees (no new cases this week) at the KF campus. The Portland-Metro campus did not have any new positive cases, keeping the total positive cases to 3 (all students). One new positive case was reported from the Chemeketa program, bringing the total to 3 (all students).

We have even more students in isolation currently (38 KF students; only one in isolation on campus) comparted to 29 last week, with 9 KF employees currently in isolation as well. We do not, however, have any students currently reported in isolation at the PM campus or from the Chemeketa program.

In analyzing the increase in students in isolation and testing positive over the last two weeks, it is clear that currently 37 individuals (to date) were impacted by a “super spreader” event (a Halloween party). Of those 37 individuals, 16 have tested positive so far and the others are in isolation (some waiting on test results, with more positives likely). It is clear that what I was trying to prevent with messages prior to Halloween were not heeded by some and the consequences are now being felt by many others that were exposed (and even positive) as a result of this social gathering where proper precautions were not followed. To say I’m disappointed is true, but my heart truly goes out to those that are sick. I hope better decisions by all of us will occur with upcoming holidays and the interactions with family and friends will be done physically distanced and with face coverings.

As I have said before, please think about your activities on and off campus. The ability to get individuals into isolation quickly is certainly making a positive difference in controlling the spread in our community. If you receive a phone call from Student Health or a public health official, please answer (or return the call) as they are calling to give you important information. Your timely response is needed and greatly appreciated.

Reminders

  • As you have lots on your mind with the fall term winding down, please don’t forget to register for winter term.
  • Please consider getting a flu shot soon, if you haven’t already done so.
  • If you live on campus and are returning after Thanksgiving, please do NOT forget to do your health screening BEFORE you return.

I’m hearing from some students that they have some final exams this week – good luck on all exams whenever you take them!

Happy Thanksgiving and stay well,
Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

The KF campus experienced its first snowfall earlier this week and we recognized those who served our country in one of the military branches. Mid-November means the holidays are fast approaching and we are definitely getting closer to the end of the term crunch time.

This week was even busier on the COVID front than last week.  This is a result of two individuals coming to campus with symptoms and subsequently tested positive for COVID, impacting over 55 others who were considered an exposure (some of whom then tested positive as well). Had the two people with symptoms stayed home and sought directions from a medical provider, it is likely the others would not have been impacted. See below for additional numbers for this week.

COVID numbers

Since last week’s report, 15 new positive cases were reported (14 KF students and 1 PM student) which surpassed last week’s highest number for a single week this term.

Currently in isolation/quarantine are 35 KF students (with an additional 61 waiting for test results), 6 PM students (same as last week) and 4 employees (up 2 from last week). Overall, the number of people in isolation/quarantine now is at 45. The 61 waiting for test results are not in isolation because they are vaccinated which follows the CDC guidance.

Reminders

Face coverings are required for everyone indoors unless actively eating. When you have a beverage, please remove your face covering to take a sip and then replace your face covering. Please be sure to wear your face covering properly (over both your nose and mouth). Reports of noncompliance to wear a face covering properly will be handled through the conduct process for students and staff.

If you are required to test weekly, please be sure to enter the test kit’s barcode and then return your test kit by noon on Tuesday to the appropriate campus location. Test results are usually available on Thursday.

Thank you for doing your part to minimize the spread of COVID across our campuses.

Stay well,

Erin

I hope midterms went well for everyone the past couple of weeks. Now that we are in November, the term is moving into the downhill side.  This week we observe Veteran's Day on Thursday as a campus holiday, so enjoy your free day and be sure to thank a veteran for their service.

This week’s COVID update provides numbers since last week and a couple of reminders.

COVID numbers

We had a busy week on the COVID front with many people in isolation/quarantine due to exposures and positive tests.

Since last week’s report, 14 new positive cases were reported (9 KF students, 2 PM students, 1 student in Salem and 2 employees) which is the highest number for a single week this term.

Currently in isolation/quarantine are 40 KF students (up 34 from last week), 6 PM students and 1 Salem student (both down one from last week) and 2 employees (down 2 from last week). Overall, the number of people in isolation/quarantine now is at 49, more than double over last week. The impact from Halloween activities, however,  is just now starting to surface.

The current compliance and vaccination rates are available on the COVID vaccination webpage which is updated weekly or so.

COVID numbers

The following are COVID numbers reported since September 27, 2021. The number of COVID positive cases totals 9 (5 KF students, 1 PM student and 3 employees). The number of people currently in isolation/quarantine is 21 (16 KF students and 5 employees).  Since September 27, 22 people ended isolation without COVID development.

In order to work quickly in identifying people that need to isolate/quarantine and minimize further exposures, please remember that if you have symptoms, an exposure to someone that is COVID positive, or if you test positive, you should NOT come to campus and contact Student Health immediately at 541-885-1800 (regardless of your campus location). We have had people come to campus that should not, which resulted in others now in isolation.  Please remember to do your daily health screening prior to coming to campus.

Reminders

Face coverings are required for everyone indoors unless actively eating. When you have a beverage, please remove your face covering to take a sip and then replace your face covering. Please be sure to wear your face covering properly (over both your nose and mouth). Reports of noncompliance to wear a face covering properly will be handled through the conduct process for students and staff.

If you are required to test weekly, please be sure to create your account with the test kit’s barcode and then return your test kit by noon on Tuesday to the appropriate campus location. Test results will be available late Thursday or early Friday.

Thank you for doing your part to minimize the spread of COVID across our campuses.

Stay well,

Erin

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Stude

Oregon Tech Faculty and Staff,

OHA Director Patrick Allen stated yesterday: “New COVID-19 cases are surging for people who are unvaccinated. The number of new cases we’re reporting each day has doubled since last week.” He continued with the following points:

  • Fully vaccinated people remain well-protected against COVID-19 and its variants.
  • People who are partially vaccinated or unvaccinated now make up more than 9 in 10 of all new infections, hospitalizations and deaths.
  • Counties with low vaccination rates are seeing the highest COVID-19 infection rates, while counties with high vaccination rates constitute almost all the counties with the lowest infection rates.

Dr. Dean Sidelinger, Oregon’s epidemiologist, stated: “One pandemic is subsiding for more than 2.4 million Oregonians who have received a COVID-19 vaccine, but for the remaining Oregonians — especially those in communities where vaccinations are lagging — the resurging virus still looms large.” The spread of COVID-19 among unvaccinated people has only worsened with the highly contagious Delta variant becoming the most dominant variant in Oregon.

Oregon Tech’s Vaccine Requirement was announced in June with a September 1 deadline (or September 16 for faculty on 10 month contracts) for compliance which requires completing one of following three options:

  1. Complete the full series of the COVID-19 vaccine and submit the attestation form
  2. Claim a Medical Exemption
  3. Claim a Non-Medical Exemption

If you are pursuing the Medical Exemption, please have the attached form completed by your medical provider. E-mail your completed form to the Office of Human Resources at OITHR@oit.edu.

An Oregon state-wide workgroup released media in support of the Non-Medical Exemption process. Instead of a video, the workgroup produced an on-line educational module which is simple to access and complete (estimated completion time is approximately five (5) minutes). Material within the module was gathered from the Oregon Health Authority and the CDC. If you are interested in claiming a Non-Medical Exemption, then access and complete the module by clicking this link (COVID-19 Educational Module) and then fill out the attached Non-Medical Exemption form.  E-mail your completed form to the Office of Human Resources at OITHR@oit.edu.

If you have any questions about these options or how to be in compliance, please contact the OHR at 541-885-1074 or e-mail OITHR@oit.edu.

It is important to remind you that if you are exposed to someone with COVID, you would not have to quarantine if you are fully vaccinated. This would also mean you can continue to come to campus to fulfill your responsibilities.

If you have not already received the vaccine and choose to get it, please go to the Get Vaccinated Oregon tool to find a vaccination provider. To be fully vaccinated by September 1, you need to get the first dose immediately.

If you have already completed the vaccination requirement, thank you! If you have not, please don’t wait as summer is flying by quickly and September will be here before you know it.

Stay well,
Erin

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech students, faculty, and staff,

I am writing as a follow-up to Dr. Foley’s e-mail (dated 7/6/21) regarding the Oregon Tech COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement to provide you with details regarding the option for claiming a Non-Medical Exemption.

You may remember that our campus community has been provided three options by which to become compliant with the Vaccine Requirement, as follows:

  1. Complete the full series of the COVID-19 vaccine
  2. Claim a Medical Exemption
  3. Claim a Non-Medical Exemption

Today, an Oregon state-wide workgroup released media in support of the Non-Medical Exemption process. Instead of a video, the workgroup produced an on-line educational module which is simple to access and complete; estimated completion time is approximately five (5) minutes. Material within the module was gathered from the Oregon Health Authority and the CDC, and you will notice that it is geared towards campus communities from universities across the state. (Subsequent versions will see that Oregon Tech is represented as well!)

If you are interested in claiming a Non-Medical Exemption, then access and complete the module by clicking this link (COVID-19 Educational Module) and then fill out the Non-Medical Exemption Form (attached). The process for submitting this form depends on whether you are a student or employee:

  • Students – Upload your completed form in the secure student health portal via TECHweb (see step-by-step instructions, attached); questions? Call ISHC at 541-885-1800 or e-mail health@oit.edu
  • Faculty and staff – E-mail your completed form to Human Resources at OITHR@oit.edu; questions? Call HR at 541-885-1074 or e-mail OITHR@oit.edu

We hope that you are having an enjoyable summer and staying safe in the heat.

Take care and stay well,

Gaylyn G. Maurer, MA, LPC
Administrative Director
Integrated Student Health Center

Oregon Tech Faculty and Staff,

As you know President Naganathan announced on June 2, 2021 that Oregon Tech students, faculty and staff are required to meet the COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement. This email provides information about the Vaccination Requirement and how to comply with the requirement, by either receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and providing documentation (called Attestation) or completing the Declination (exemption) process.

The Attestation process and Medical Exemption are now ready for you to submit the documentation by following the steps below. The Declination process for a Non-Medical Exemption, however, is not quite ready so please watch your email and check the website for the details of this process.

How to Comply with the Oregon Tech COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement
The requirement deadline for compliance is September 1, 2021. You have three options from which to choose in order to comply with the requirement:

  1. Complete the full series of the COVID-19 vaccine – There are currently 3 vaccines being administered in the United States (Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson). Employees who have been vaccinated internationally, please reach out to OHR for assistance. You are expected to be fully vaccinated by the deadline, meaning you need to plan on having your final dose at least two weeks prior to September 1.
  2. Claim a Medical Exemption – If, during a conversation with your medical provider, they advise you against taking the vaccine for medical reasons you can have them complete the COVID-19 Medical Exemption Form excusing you from doing so.
  3. Claim a Non-Medical Exemption – If you have a personal reason or religious, philosophical, or other deeply held belief that prohibits you from being vaccinated, you can decline by claiming a Non-Medical Exemption. In order to do so, you are required to watch an Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Tech sanctioned COVID-19 vaccine video which provides educational information about the vaccine, as well as reviewing common myths, benefits, and risks of immunization. After viewing the video (once available in the next week or so), you will complete the COVID-19 Non-Medical Exemption Form.

No matter which option you choose, you will need to submit an attestation or exemption form electronically to the Office of Human Resources:

  1. Attestation – click here to complete the form
  2. Exemption – complete the COVID Vaccine Medical Exemption form and send electronically to OITHR@oit.edu; the Non-Medical Exemption process requires viewing a video which will be available approximately July 9 (watch the vaccine website)

Although the COVID pandemic is improving, it is still very likely that COVID will be with us fall term and possibly the rest of the academic year, as variants spread. If the Oregon Tech community (students, faculty and staff) get vaccinated, it will allow campus operations and activities to resume in a more typical manner. COVID exposure and spread are also likely to continue. It is important to remind you that if you are exposed to someone with COVID, you would not have to quarantine if you are fully vaccinated. This would also mean you can continue to report to work. If you are unvaccinated and exposed to COVID-19, you may be required to quarantine.

The requirement for face coverings also changed last week. Individuals who are not fully vaccinated are required to wear a face covering inside campus buildings. Any individuals may also choose to continue to wear a face covering at Oregon Tech, even if fully vaccinated.

If you have not already received the vaccine and want to get it, please go to the Get Vaccinated Oregon tool to find a vaccination provider.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the Vaccine Requirement itself.

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

  1. Complete the full series of the COVID-19 vaccine – There are currently 3 vaccines being administered in the United States (Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson). International students may have access to other World Health Organization-approved vaccines, which are acceptable, as well.
No matter which option you choose, you will need to submit documentation to the Integrated Student Health Center (ISHC) through their secure health portal. I have attached step-by-step instructions with screen-shots for your reference. Basically, after you log into the health portal, follow these steps:

  1. On the portal Home page, click on “Enter My COVID-19 Vaccination Information”
  2. Upload one of the following: COVID-19 immunization card; COVID-19 Medical Exemption Form (attached); or COVID-19 Non-Medical Exemption Form (attached)
  3. If you are immunized, you will also enter the dates and brand of your doses

You will receive a confirmation e-mail in your secure health portal after your submission is processed by ISHC. If you have any questions about the submission of your documentation, call ISHC at 541-885-1800.

Although the COVID pandemic is improving, it is still very likely that COVID will be with us fall term and possibly the rest of the academic year, as variants spread. COVID exposure and spread are also likely to continue. It is important to remind you that if you are exposed to someone with COVID, you would not have to quarantine if you are fully vaccinated. This would also mean you can continue to attend class and participate in extracurricular activities. If you have not already received the vaccine and want to get it, please go to the Get Vaccinated Oregon tool to find a vaccination provider.

The requirement for face coverings also changed last week. Individuals may choose to continue to wear a face covering in Oregon Tech buildings which is certainly to be respected as a prevention measure, even if fully vaccinated. Individuals not fully vaccinated are to wear a face covering inside campus buildings.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the Vaccine Requirement itself.

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.

Dear Oregon Tech Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Thank you for your individual and combined efforts these past 16 months as we navigated the challenges of the COVID pandemic. Although the pandemic is not over, the time for restrictions to be modified has arrived. Based on the most recent Centers for Disease Control Guidance (CDC) and in accordance with Governor Brown’s June 25, 2021, announcement lifting all remaining COVID-19 restrictions issued under emergency statutes, with limited exceptions, Oregon Tech will modify requirements as noted below, effective tomorrow, Thursday, July 1, 2021.

  • Face Coverings: The modified face covering requirement allows individuals that are vaccinated to go without a face covering. The use of face coverings will continue to be required for anyone not vaccinated, including visitors to our campuses. Other individuals may choose to continue to wear a face covering even when not required.

  • Physical Distancing: Physical distancing should be continued in large gatherings; otherwise, building and space utilization is no longer restricted. When holding gatherings or events that could include individuals who are not fully vaccinated, such as visitors or others from outside the university, appropriate prevention strategies should be utilized.

This is not a time to let our guard down. While significant advances have been made against this disease, there is still much work to be done. We must all remain vigilant. We each have a continued responsibility to our fellow coworkers, students, and community members. Accordingly, we ask you to:

  1. Continue to engage in COVID-19-related personal hygiene practices, including performing daily health checks and staying home when you are not feeling well.
  2. Consider receiving the COVID vaccine if you have not done so.
  3. If unvaccinated, wear a face covering to protect yourself and others, particularly in indoor and higher-density locations.
  4. Respect others’ decision on whether they choose to wear a face covering.
  5. Update your vaccination if boosters are determined necessary.
  6. Rely on and stay informed by trusted and science-based information sources.

To that end, Oregon Tech will:

  1. Continue to work with appropriate entities regarding public health guidance, share information with the campus communities, and update our practices accordingly.
  2. Continue to require compliance with the Fall Vaccine Requirement (or appropriate declination) to be completed by September 1 -- more information will be sent by early next week.
  3. Provide hand sanitation stations throughout campuses.
  4. Require any individual not vaccinated to wear a face covering while inside campus facilities
  5. Respect individual decisions to wear face coverings as a personal choice for COVID-19 risk-reduction and other reasons.

This latest update is indeed welcome news as we collectively see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you for your contributions in helping our university maintain our operations and thrive throughout the pandemic. I offer special recognition to Dr. Erin Foley for leading this effort.

As each of us continue to do our part in the days, weeks, and months to come, we can celebrate a return to normalcy and life as we knew it pre-COVID. I wish the best for you throughout this summer and look forward to the opportunity for us to gather together again.

Warm regards,

Nagi G. Naganathan, Ph.D., ASME Fellow
President

Oregon Tech Community,

Congratulations! We all made it to the end of the academic year (except maybe a few faculty members working to get final grades submitted) even with the many challenges this year. Congrats, graduates! Many thanks to all of you for all of your efforts to do what was needed day in and day out in response to the pandemic.

Although this is the last weekly email for the academic year, please watch for email updates through the summer about the Oregon Tech COVID Vaccine Program and other information for Fall 2021. It is with great anticipation that with sufficient numbers of people vaccinated, campus operations (and life, in general) will be more of the activities that we all want to return to as soon as possible.

Yesterday’s COVID update has nobody (students, faculty or staff from any campus location) in isolation and no positive cases reported. It is great to end the academic year without any reports of COVID issues. Again, thank you all.

Below is a summary of COVID for fall, winter and spring terms.

Term   KF Students PM Students Salem Students Employees
Isolations: Fall 272 22 6 64
  Winter 79 4 6 33
  Spring 217 2 0 42
Positive Cases: Fall 65 4 3 10
  Winter 24 3 0 5
  Spring 44 1 1 7

Vaccine

As President Naganathan announced last week, Oregon Tech students, faculty and staff that will be on campus in the fall must comply with the Oregon Tech COVID Vaccine Program. Oregon Tech students will work with the Integrated Student Health Center (ISHC) to meet the COVID-19 vaccine requirement for fall term. More details will be sent in an e-mail to all students close to July 1st, which will provide information about how to submit vaccination information or how to claim an exemption. Currently, the exemption process is being finalized by a state-wide workgroup, which is subject to approval by the Oregon Health Authority. There will be options for Medical Exemptions (which will require endorsement by a medical provider) and Non-Medical Exemptions (which will require the viewing of an informational video); in either case, documentation of the exemption will be provided to ISHC. Please check your Oregon Tech e-mail account the first week of July for more details about the submission process. If you have questions, contact ISHC at 541-885-1800.

The process for staff will also be sent out in the upcoming weeks.

Did You Know...

  • The COVID-19 vaccine has gone through careful testing in large clinical trials. The FDA’s emergency use enables drug companies to mass produce and distribute the vaccine. After people receive the vaccine, they are monitored for side effects for 15-30 minutes.
  • Even if you have had COVID-19, you should still receive a vaccine when it becomes available to you. There is not enough evidence to tell how long someone is immune to the virus after contracting and recovering from COVID-19.
  • If you have received a first dose of a vaccine that requires two shots, the second shot can be given at a different clinic. However, the second dose must be the same vaccine manufacturer as the first shot. You cannot receive a different manufacturer’s vaccine. Make sure to bring your white vaccination card to your second-dose appointment to verify that you received the first dose and its manufacturer.

Reminder: Oregon Tech will continue to require face coverings and physical distancing for everyone, regardless of vaccination status, until this requirement is revised and communicated to campus.

Congratulations to the Oregon Tech class of 2021!

Stay well and enjoy the summer months,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

We are one week from completing spring term and the academic year! Congrats to all of us for surviving this year and big congratulations to the graduating class of 2021! In September not many of us could have predicted how COVID would play out throughout the academic year. Your efforts to follow the COVID prevention measures and protocols resulted in a better-than-predicted year (even with the spring surge in April). So thank you all for your efforts.

Next week’s email will summarize the academic year and will be the last weekly update. Please continue to read your email for information about the vaccine requirement details and other updates for fall term.

COVID-19 Update

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 0 KF (down 4), 0 PM and 0 Salem (no change for PM or Salem)
  • Employees in isolation: 1 (down 6 from last week)
  • Total number of positive cases since March 29: 53 (44 KF students; 1 PM student; 1 Salem student; 7 employees) which is the same as last week; winter term had 32 positive cases and fall term had 82 positive cases

KF students can have a COVID test on campus Wednesdays, 11:00am – 2:00pm, in the basement of DOW (enter from the north and then exit to the south after testing). Next week will be the last opportunity to test on campus.

Reminder: Oregon Tech will continue to require face coverings and physical distancing for everyone, regardless of vaccination, for the remainder of spring term for all activities, including classes/labs and social events.

Vaccine

As President Naganathan announced this week, Oregon Tech students, faculty and staff that will be on campus in the fall must comply with the university’s vaccination requirement. Keep an eye on your Oregon Tech e-mail account the first week of July for more details about the submission process. If you have questions, contact ISHC at 541-885-1800. The process for staff will also be sent out in the upcoming weeks.

A vaccination clinic will be held on the KF campus on Monday (see the email sent yesterday for details). The vaccine for this event is the Pfizer and requires two doses. Anyone (including family members that are at least 12 years old) are eligible.

All4Oregon at the Oregon Convention Center: All4Oregon is a COVID-19 mass vaccination site at the Oregon Convention Center, created with the collaboration and leadership of Kaiser Permanente, Legacy Health, OHSU, and Providence. The clinic provides vaccines to all eligible people, 16 and older, in the greater Portland metro area. Walk-ins are now welcome to the All4Oregon clinic or you can schedule your appointment directly here.

Vaccine info for all locations: please create an account through the Get Vaccinated Oregon tool to confirm eligibility and find a vaccination provider.

As a reminder, we all still need to be vigilant (even if vaccinated) with properly wearing face coverings, social distancing, hand washing, etc. Please continue to practice all COVID prevention measures regularly: properly wear a face covering inside and outside, maintain 6 feet between you and others, frequently wash your hands, regularly sanitize high touch surfaces and limit gathering socially with others, and get a vaccine. Please be responsible for completing your daily health screening. Anyone not well should stay home and seek direction from the appropriate healthcare provider.

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

I hope this message finds you in good health. To continue protecting the health and safety of our community while transitioning to more normal academic operations and campus life, the University will require all faculty, students, and staff returning to our campuses in the fall to be immunized against COVID-19 unless they claim an exemption under law or applicable policies.

This requirement strengthens the University’s ability to protect the health and safety of our campuses and neighboring communities. COVID-19 vaccination for Oregon Tech community members will contribute to greater immunity, reduce the risk of sudden clusters of outbreaks on our campuses, and help protect members of our communities who are at the highest risk of developing complications from the virus.

This requirement is in line with many public and private universities and colleges in Oregon that are requiring students, faculty, and staff to be vaccinated as a condition of returning to campus in the fall. Additional information regarding incentives to encourage vaccinations, the process of providing vaccination information or exemption requests will be forthcoming.

Since early April 2020, Oregon Tech has utilized a combination of in-person and remote teaching methods. Hybrid delivery will continue through the summer term, with a combination of remote and in-person courses, and on-campus laboratory experiences, with appropriate physical distancing and other safety measures in place.

Resumption of in-person teaching in September will be guided by Governor Brown’s staging plan for the state to reopen higher education institutions across Oregon as well as vaccine access and guidance received from state health, education, and other officials. Oregon Tech will continue to monitor trends in the number of cases and take measures to address the safety of students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, Oregon Tech Online will continue to offer a variety of courses and degree options through virtual delivery. Programs at Chemeketa and Boeing sites will follow the state and host-campus guidelines.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation as we work toward a successful return to campus in the fall.

Sincerely,

Nagi G. Naganathan, Ph.D., ASME Fellow
President

Oregon Tech Community,

Another week down and only two more to go. As the stress levels remain high to get everything completed for the term and the end of the academic year, we all need to continue our COVID prevention efforts, especially staying home if not well. Nobody wants to have to finish the term in isolation so please be careful and remain diligent in face coverings, physical distancing and washing hands. The final tool in our prevention toolbox is vaccination – please see below for a drive through vaccination option on Wednesday (June 2) with the Johnson – Johnson (one dose) vaccine. Fully vaccinated individuals do not have to isolate for 14 days if exposed (they only have to monitor for any symptoms).

Monday is Memorial Day and is a campus holiday. Please remember the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Enjoy the long weekend but be safe and remember COVID is still present even though numbers are improving.

COVID-19 Update

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 4 KF (down 18), 0 PM and 0 Salem (no change for PM or Salem)
  • Employees in isolation: 7 (up 4 from last week)
  • Total number of positive cases since March 29: 53 (44 KF students; 1 PM student; 1 Salem student; 7 employees) which is an increase of 1 over last week (an employee); winter term had 32 positive cases and fall term had 82 positive cases

KF students can have a COVID test on campus Wednesdays, 11:00am – 2:00pm, in the basement of DOW (enter from the north and then exit to the south after testing).

Reminder: Oregon Tech will continue to require face coverings and physical distancing for everyone, regardless of vaccination, for the remainder of spring term for all activities, including classes/labs and social events.

Vaccine

Last week, Governor Brown announced several incentives for Oregonians to get vaccinated. The “Take Your Shot, Oregon” program offers a $1,000,000 prize for any Oregonian over 18 years of age. Other incentives include five $100,000 Oregon College Saving Plan Scholarship winners (ages 12-17) and one $10,000 winner for each county in the state. Anyone having received one dose of any COVID vaccine by June 27th will be eligible for all the prizes and winners will be announced the following week. The prizes are being paid for through federal relief dollars.

Oregon Tech is currently having discussions about a COVID vaccine requirement or not for Fall term, 2021, with a decision to be announced by the end of the month. If the vaccine is required, an exemption process will be included as it is legally required for all vaccination programs. A decision will be forthcoming by the end of the month. The more people on campus that are vaccinated will likely result in fewer COVID requirements next year.

Klamath Falls vaccination information

Klamath Health Partnership will host a drive-thru COVID vaccine event on June 2nd at the Klamath County Fairgrounds. The event is by appointment only beginning at 9am and will offer the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. "We want to make it as easy as possible to get vaccinated," said Dr. Flor Mounts, medical director at KHP. “It is important to get as many people in our community vaccinated so we can protect those who can’t receive the vaccination.” Any Klamath County resident, regardless of patient status, may register. You must pre-register to receive a vaccination. For more information, please call 541-851-8110.

Appointments for Sky Lakes Medical Center (located across the street from campus) can be made by calling 1-833-606-4370 weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to schedule your appointment. No walk-in slots or on-site appointments are available.

Appointments can be scheduled through the Klamath Tribal Health website without having to make any phone calls at all, simply by visiting our website, clicking the link (on the right side next to the hours), and answering the prompts. The online portal will also provide text reminders of the vaccination appointment, and schedule the 2nd dose of the vaccine as well. This can also be directly accessed here.

Oregon Tech Community,

Another week is done and we are one week closer to the end of the academic year! Last week’s numbers were looking better but as you will see below we have many people still impacted by COVID spread. Some of our recent surge is a result of individuals coming to campus or attending events with symptoms. It is imperative that we all pay attention to symptoms and if we are experiencing any COVID symptoms (even if vaccinated), stay home and call a medical provider for guidance (students, please contact Student Health at 541-885-1800). The COVID numbers for spring term have now surpassed winter term’s numbers and there are still three weeks left of spring term.

COVID-19 Update

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 22 KF (up from 6), 0 PM and 0 Salem (no change for PM or Salem)
  • Employees in isolation: 3 (up one from last week)
  • Total number of positive cases since March 29: 52 (44 KF students; 1 PM student; 1 Salem student; 6 employees) which is an increase of 11 over last week (all KF students); winter term had 32 positive cases and fall term had 82 positive cases

Vaccine

Last week, Governor Brown stated: “Oregonians now have a choice of how to protect themselves and others from COVID-19: either get vaccinated, or continue wearing a mask and following physical distancing requirements. The new CDC guidance makes clear that vaccines are the best tool to protect yourself, and everyone around you. Vaccines are also the fastest way to get back to doing the things we all love, and to returning to a sense of normalcy.”

Yesterday, Governor Brown announced several incentives for Oregonians to get vaccinated.

Oregon Tech Community,

As you may have heard recently, the CDC issued new guidance for lifting face covering and physical distancing requirements for fully-vaccinated individuals. Governor Brown issued a statement on Thursday that Oregon will be following this guidance with some exceptions. She specifically stated, “Nothing is changing for schools this school year. . .” and continued to indicate both OHA and Oregon OSHA will be providing updated guidance soon for businesses and employers.

For Now Status Quo: Oregon Tech will continue to require face coverings and physical distancing for everyone, regardless of vaccination, for the remainder of spring term for all activities, including classes/labs and social events.

COVID-19 Update

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 6 KF (down from 9), 0 PM and 0 Salem (no change for PM or Salem)
  • Employees in isolation: 2 (down one from last week)
  • Total number of positive cases since March 29: 41 (33 KF students; 1 PM student; 1 Salem student; 6 employees) which is an increase of 2 over last week (2 KF students)

KF students can have a COVID test on campus Wednesdays, 11:00am – 2:00pm, in the basement of DOW (enter from the north and then exit to the south after testing).

Governor Brown’s press release on Thursday also noted: “Oregonians now have a choice of how to protect themselves and others from COVID-19: either get vaccinated, or continue wearing a mask and following physical distancing requirements. The new CDC guidance makes clear that vaccines are the best tool to protect yourself, and everyone around you. Vaccines are also the fastest way to get back to doing the things we all love, and to returning to a sense of normalcy.”

Oregon Tech is currently having discussions about a COVID vaccine requirement or not for Fall term, 2021, with a decision to be announced by the end of the month. If the vaccine is required, an exemption process will be included as it is legally required for all vaccination programs. More discussions will occur this week. If you would like to share your opinion on this issue, you can send me an email with your thoughts.

Oregon Tech Community,

Spring term is officially more than half over; we are on the downhill side of finishing the term and the academic year! The weeks are flying by and before we know it we will have survived the year! As reported last week, fifteen counties moved to the extreme risk level. These same counties moved down to the high risk level yesterday because statewide hospitalizations decreased. I can also report that the recent KF campus surge is resolving as numbers are improving.

In order for the risk level to be lowered and more opportunities for end-of-the-year events to occur, COVID spread must be reduced. The only way to do this is through continuation of the COVID prevention measures and getting the COVID vaccine. Please consider getting the vaccine to protect yourself and others, and once you are vaccinated you can start doing more (information about vaccination locations below).

COVID-19 Update

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 9 KF (down from 35), 0 PM and 0 Salem (no change for PM or Salem)
  • Employees in isolation: 3 (no change from last week)
  • Total number of positive cases since March 29: 39 (31 KF students; 1 PM student; 1 Salem student; 6 employees) which is an increase of 13 over last week (12 KF students and 1 employee)

KF students can have a COVID test on campus Wednesdays, 11:00am – 2:00pm, in the basement of DOW (enter from the north and then exit to the south after testing).

Benefits of getting vaccinated against COVID-19 We all want to get back to our lives. Vaccinations can help us get back to many of the things we miss most. When enough people get vaccinated, we will be able to see our loved ones, celebrate holidays, and return to more of our normal life, including the way we can interact on campus. More information about the Oregon Tech vaccination program will be out next week.

Oregon Tech Community,

Yesterday, OHA reported:

  • Cases have increased 20% or more for the last five weeks
  • Oregon is the state with the highest rate of increase in cases over the last two weeks
  • Hospitalizations are increasing at almost double what they were a week ago
  • The portion of hospitalized cases of people who are ages 18 to 34 has increased by almost 50 percent

The change in county risk levels (to the extreme level) went into effect yesterday and numbers will be assessed again on Tuesday. Any change to the risk level would take effect on Friday. For Oregon Tech, this was one of the worst weeks for us since fall term. The increase in positive cases on the KF campus are a result of exposures at a social event and a classroom exposure. We are nearing the end of the academic year and are extremely tired of COVID dictating how we live, but we must not relax our efforts to prevent COVID spread among our community members.

COVID-19 Update

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 35 KF (up from 24), 0 PM (down one from last week), 0 Salem (no change for Salem)
  • Employees in isolation: 3 (down 5 from last week)
  • Total number of positive cases since March 29: 26 (19 KF students; 1 PM student; 1 Salem student; 5 employees) which is an increase of 12 students over last week

KF students can have a COVID test on campus Wednesdays, 11:00am – 2:00pm, in the basement of DOW (enter from the north and then exit to the south after testing).

Oregon Tech Community,

Today Governor Brown announced many counties are going to change their risk levels this week. Klamath, Clackamas and Marion counties are among the 15 counties to move to extreme risk on Friday, April 30. County data will be evaluated weekly for at least the next three weeks with updates given on Tuesday to go into effect on Friday. Counties moved to extreme risk will remain for a maximum of three weeks.

In terms of impact for our campus communities, I can provide the following information for Klamath Falls:

  • Since Friday at 6pm, there are an additional 49 students who have been impacted by COVID
  • Since Friday at 6pm, an additional 6 students on the KF campus have tested positive (21 positive cases reported since March 27)
  • Close to half of the students who have reported symptoms during the month of April have tested positive
  • There are currently 44 students on the KF campus who are isolating, which is the highest we have had at one time since the beginning of the pandemic
  • Student gatherings are proving to be the most risky in terms of transmission
  • An entire class had an exposure because the students were not physically distanced and someone attended class when ill
  • The vaccine is helping to reduce the number of students who have to isolate following an exposure
  • COVID symptoms are similar to allergies; please stay home if you have ANY symptoms to minimize the potential spread to others

Student events scheduled for the next three weeks will be reviewed and the event planners will be notified if the event is cancelled.

Vaccinations

Governor Brown stated: "The fastest way to lift health and safety restrictions is for Oregonians to get vaccinated as quickly as possible and follow the safety measures we know stop this virus from spreading... My goal is to lift these restrictions as soon as it is safely possible, and keep Oregon on the path for lifting most health and safety requirements by the end of June so we can fully reopen our economy. But we will only get there if enough Oregonians get vaccinated. There are appointments available right now all across the state."

Oregon Tech Community,

Yesterday Governor Brown made this statement: "In the race between vaccines and variants, right now the variants have the upper hand. . . [T]oday’s cases topped 1,000, with Oregon now ranking second in the nation for having the most rapid growth of infection spread. Our hospitals are about to surpass 300 positive COVID-19 cases. That means several counties are on the verge of having to reinstate Extreme Risk restrictions on businesses and activities.” Klamath, Clackamas and Marion counties are likely to be moved to extreme as early as Tuesday, which would likely be in effect for three weeks.

Campus numbers continued to increase again this week due to individuals coming to class/work with symptoms instead of staying home. The expectation still remains that daily health screenings are completed prior to going to class/work and taking the appropriate actions: students contact Student Health (541-885-1800) and employees contact your primary medical provider.

COVID-19 Update

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 24 KF (up from 15), 1 PM (up one from last week), 0 Salem (no change for Salem)
  • Employees in isolation: 8 (up six from last week)
  • Total number of cases since March 29: 14 (8 KF students; 1 Salem student; 5 employees) which is an increase of 5 students and 3 employees over last week

KF students can have a COVID test on campus Wednesdays, 11:00am – 2:00pm, in the basement of DOW (enter from the north and then exit to the south after testing).

Reminders

Sky Lakes Collaborative Health Center on the medical center campus will be the site of an April 24 vaccination clinic also for those 18 and older. You can be assured of a dose and minimum wait times by making a COVID-19 vaccination appointment. Call 1-833-606-4370 weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to schedule your appointment. Oregon Tech Community,

It is now almost a full 2 weeks since the Easter weekend and many family events. As anticipated, our COVID numbers have jumped significantly and in working through the positive cases, these individuals had exposures through family events. The impact is clear in the numbers below. We must continue to address COVID as much today as we did at the beginning by following the prevention measures and now getting the vaccine. Comfort and familiarity with the people you are socializing with cannot lead to complacency in following prevention measures to minimize COVID exposures. Please continue your daily health screenings and stay home if you are not well.

County numbers are still on the rise again this week so we may see a change in the county risk level next week for both Klamath and Clackamas counties, which will further limit campus operations.

COVID-19 Update

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 15 KF (up from 2), 0 PM, 0 Salem (no change for PM or Salem)
  • Employees in isolation: 2 (no change from last week)
  • Total number of cases since March 29: 5 (4 KF students; 1 employee) which is an increase of 3 students over last week

KF students can have a COVID test on campus Wednesdays, 11:00am – 2:00pm, in the basement of DOW (enter from the north and then exit to the south after testing).

Reminders

Vaccine information for KF: vaccinations will be given to people 18 and older on April 22 and April 23 at the Sky Lakes Vaccination Clinic on the fourth floor of the original medical center. Sky Lakes Collaborative Health Center on the medical center campus will be the site of an April 24 vaccination clinic also for those 18 and older. The Oregon Health Authority will remove vaccination qualifying conditions beginning April 19. You can be assured of a dose and minimum wait times by making a COVID-19 vaccination appointment. Oregon Tech Community,

Week two of the term is behind us and the weather is staying pleasant, but COVID is still here. The COVID numbers in Klamath and Clackamas counties increased enough over the past two weeks that both counties were notified last Tuesday that the risk level was changed to High Risk (Marion county remains at the High Risk level). This change went into effect yesterday and will be the risk level for at least the next two weeks. This is a clear indicator that we must continue to practice the prevention measures every day. With the Easter holiday just last week and family gatherings being the greatest source of exposure, we are likely to see numbers continue to increase for the next week or so.

COVID-19 Update

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 2 KF (down from 3), 0 PM, 0 Salem (no change for PM or Salem)
  • Employees in isolation: 2 (up from 0)
  • Total number of cases since March 29: 2 (1 student; 1 employee) which is an increase of 1 over last week

Oregon Tech Community,

I hope everyone experienced a relaxing and rejuvenating spring break and the first week of the new term was as nice as the weather (spring weather, however, may not be here to stay).

Although spring term marks a year of living with COVID, we are still operating under the same expectations and requirements as fall and winter terms, and we all must remain committed to abiding by the face covering and physical distancing requirements. Additionally, daily health screenings must continue and if you are not well, please stay home.

If you are tracking the positive case numbers by county, state or across the nation, you know the numbers are once again on the rise. If the county risk level changes, this will likely impact which activities can be held and how. Once the spring break surge subsides, perhaps more opportunities for events can occur, especially outdoor activities.

COVID-19 Update

Below is a summary of COVID for fall and winter terms, which clearly indicates a positive trend.

Term KF Students PM Students Salem Students Employees
Isolations: Fall 272 22 6 64
  Winter 79 4 6 33
Positive cases: Fall 65 4 3 10
  Winter 24 3 0 5

This week’s COVID numbers:

  • Students in isolation: 3 KF, 0 PM, 0 Salem
  • Employees in isolation: 0
  • Total number of cases since March 29: 1 student

KF students can have a COVID test on campus Wednesdays, 11:00am – 2:00pm, in the basement of DOW (enter from the north and then exit to the south after testing).

Vaccines are becoming more available with faculty, staff, and student employees becoming eligible Monday (information sent out earlier this week about locations/appointments) as the CDC considers higher education staff to be frontline workers. Governor Brown also announced yesterday that all family members of frontline workers are also eligible beginning Monday. Students are likely to be eligible next month (unless you are eligible under another classification). As you become eligible, we encourage you to get vaccinated (if you haven’t already). As a reminder, we all still need to be diligent (even if vaccinated) with properly wearing face coverings, social distancing, hand washing, etc. as there is still the possibility that vaccinated individuals can still transmit the virus.

Reminders

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) – please join us in these events throughout the month.

Please continue to practice all COVID prevention measures regularly: properly wear a face covering inside and outside, maintain 6 feet between you and others, frequently wash your hands, regularly sanitize high touch surfaces and limit gathering socially with others. Please be responsible for completing your daily health screening. Anyone not well should stay home and seek direction from the appropriate healthcare provider.

Oregon Tech Community,

Congrats! We made it through winter term which most find to be the most challenging term of the year and this year that appears to be the consensus as well. Although we have no way of knowing what the COVID challenges will be week to week, I have to say winter term was better than I predicted. I appreciate everyone’s effort to not bring COVID back at the start of the term as well as doing your part throughout the term to reduce the spread. Before you relax and enjoy spring break, please read this week’s update and note that the next update will be April 3 (the end of the first week of spring term).

COVID-19 Update

The last few weeks and this week show great news on the COVID front:

  • Students in isolation: 1 KF
  • Employees in isolation: 2
  • Number of new positive cases: 4 (2 KF students, 2 employees)
  • Total number of cases since January 2: 30

KF students can have a COVID test on campus during spring break on Wednesday, 11:00am – 2:00pm, in the basement of DOW (enter from the north and then exit to the south after testing). Testing will continue spring term with the same day/time and location each Wednesday.

Reminders

The start of spring term is not delayed; classes begin on March 29. PM labs are in person; lecture courses are remote. KF labs and most 100 & 200 level classes are in person and most 300 &400 level classes remote.

Athletic sporting events are picking up but spectators are not allowed at this time. Events are being streamed for free – go here for upcoming events and to get the live stats or video.

As we are in a sprint to finish winter term and think about spring term being the same operationally as last fall and this term, it is encouraging that an announcement for next fall to be back in person (COVID prevalence permitting). I welcome the idea of the campus activity returning to a more typical state! I’d like to have COVID in the rearview mirror come September but I’m not sure that will be the case. Nonetheless, we can do all that is required now so that we can get to our desired state for the next academic year.

COVID-19 Update

As of today, only 1 PM student is in isolation and there is one employee in isolation. Additionally, there was only one new positive cases reported this week (a PM student). The total number of positive cases since January 2 at 24.

Reminders

As spring break (March 22-26) draws closer, please consider your health and safety (and others upon your return) to limit COVID exposure and the possibility of bring COVID back to start the spring term

Oregon Tech Community,

Winter appeared in many areas across the state and country and created some challenges due to power outages. I hope by now that if you lost power, it is now restored.

As the state and Klamath/Clackamas counties COVID positive case numbers continue to decrease each week, I want to thank you for continuing to do what we need to do to reduce the spread of COVID on our campuses. We are seeing improvement but we have not yet won the war against COVID. Even as vaccine is getting out to individuals, we must continue to practice all of the COVID safety measures.

COVID-19 Update

As of today, only 1 employee is in isolation; there are no students in isolation which hasn’t happened since early fall term. Additionally, there were no new positive cases reported this week, keeping the total number of positive cases since January 2 at 23.

Reminders

As spring break (March 22-26) draws closer, please consider your health and safety (and others upon your return) to limit COVID exposure and the possibility of bringing COVID back to start spring term.

The Oregon Tech Foundation Scholarship Application deadline is March 1 at 5:00pm. Don’t wait - apply now!

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

We are officially at the halfway point of the academic year and on the downhill side now; it feels like each week is passing faster and faster.

Klamath and Clackamas counties moved from the extreme to high risk levels (effective yesterday, 2/12) which allows some activities to resume (albeit still limited). This status will be in place for the next two weeks when the counties could move again (down to moderate risk if COVID numbers continue to improve or back to extreme if COVID numbers get worse).  See below for more details about how campus operations are changing.

COVID-19 Update

As of today, 3 KF students and only 1 employee are in isolation (there are no PM or Chemeketa students in isolation).  Two new positive cases (one KF student and one employee) reported this week, bringing the total number of positive cases since January 2 to 23.

The change in county designation allows us to have KF students eating in the dining area (chairs are placed to maintain 6 feet between diners, please don’t move the chairs).  Student clubs can meet in person with capacity limits based on the size of the meeting room (25% capacity or 50 people, whichever is LESS); events with food must still be packaged for individuals; no self-service dishes.  TechRec is fully open with extended weekday hours and weekend hours; the workout sign up requirement is suspended.

Reminders

As spring break (March 22-26) draws closer, please consider your health and safety (and others upon your return) to limit COVID exposure and the possibility of bring COVID back to start the spring term.

Course registration for spring term begins Monday, February 15. The course schedule is available here

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

It is great to have another week down. And this week was really good on the COVID front! Although we are all getting very tired of following the COVID requirements on campus, it is making a difference. Thank you!

COVID-19 Update

Testing at the KF campus resumed this week and 3 students tested. Testing is every Wednesday, 11:00am – 2:00pm in the basement of DOW.

As of today, only 2 KF students and 3 employees are in isolation (there are no PM or Chemeketa students in isolation).  No new positive cases reported this week; the total number of positive cases since January 2 remains at 21. These numbers have not been this good since early fall term. Thank you for doing your part; it really is important despite how tired we are of face coverings, keeping 6 feet from others, regularly washing hands, and sanitizing surfaces.

New Service: You Are Not Alone

The pandemic has been hard on us all, in lots of different ways. The Integrated Student Health Center (ISHC) wants you to know that You Are Not Alone! Starting next week (Monday, Feb. 8th) we will be offering free, confidential Drop-In Zoom Counseling for students (regardless of campus location). You can talk with a professional counselor about what is happening in your life right now, get support, and walk away with specific strategies and “next steps” for how to handle issues which you are facing. This can be a one-time talk or it could lead to working with a counselor on a regular basis; it’s up to you. We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant Zoom account, so there is no concern about privacy, and what we talk about is confidential and stays separate from your academic record. Try it out – connect with us and let us help you navigate this complicated, COVID-19 world. Drop-In Zoom will be available starting Feb. 8th, 9am to 11am on MWF and 2pm to 4pm on Tu/Th at the following URL: https://oregontechishc.zoom.us/my/you.are.not.alone

Passcode: NotAlone. Questions? Call ISHC at 541-885-1800.

Reminders

Course registration for spring term begins February 15. The course schedule is available here.  Be sure to schedule an appointment with your advisor BEFORE it is your time to register.

Check out the new graphic in my signature line. Please do your part to stop the spread; it’s on all of us. Note the new graphic below and feel free to use it in your email signature.

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

I hope the Thanksgiving break provided you lots of time with family and friends as well as time to rejuvenate for the remaining two weeks of fall term.

COVID numbers
Since the last report, 5 new positive cases were reported (4 KF students and 1 PM students), bringing the total number of positive cases to 61 since September 27.

Currently in isolation/quarantine are 9 KF students (with an additional 2 waiting for test results), one PM student, and 3 employees. The 2 waiting for test results are not in isolation because they are vaccinated which follows the CDC guidance.

Reminders

Please be sure to register for winter term classes before the end of this week and the start of final exams.

Winter term classes will start January 3 with classes in person. However, our COVID response group will continue to monitor the Omicron variant and information from the CDC and OHA.

The last day to request a complete withdrawal from fall classes is Friday, December 10.

Thank you for doing your part to minimize the spread of COVID across our campuses.

Stay well,
Erin

Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

Winter term is typically the most challenging term of the academic year.  This term appears to be no exception but the good news is that we are approaching the midpoint not only of the term but of the academic year.  We all need to continue to focus one week at a time (or in some cases, one day at a time).

This week we have some positive news from the Oregon Health Authority.  The number of weekly COVID cases showed a significant decline for the week of January 18 – 24, with a 48% decrease from the previous week in new daily cases in Oregon. Likewise, 33% fewer people were hospitalized and the number of deaths declined from 195 to 74 for the week.  These are numbers that we want to continue to see decrease, but that doesn’t mean we can stop doing our COVID prevention measures and daily health screenings. We must remain vigilant.

COVID-19 Update

As of today, only 5 students are in isolation (all in KF), which is down from 12 last week. The number of KF employees in isolation is 3 (one less than last week). Only two new positive cases were reported this week (one KF student and one employee), bringing the total number of reported cases since January 2 to 21.

On-site COVID testing for KF students resumes on Wednesday, February 3 with an indoor location. Testing will run Wednesdays from 11:00am to 2:00pm and the location is now in the basement of DOW.  Students wanting testing should enter from the north (off the circle drive) and will then exit to the south after testing.  Look for the directional signs.

As the vaccine becomes more available and people are vaccinated, face coverings will still need to be worn and the other safety precautions still practiced.  As more information about vaccine accessibility is available, information will be shared regularly.

Reminders

As COVID fatigue continues to hit us, please remember to take care of yourself.  Students can meet with a counselor remotely by making an appointment: PM students can call 503-821-1313 and KF students can call 541-885-1800. Employees can connect to the Employee Assistance Program and PEBB’s Wellness Program.

Governor Brown revised the requirements for fitness centers, which now allows TechRec to re-open with capacity limits.  Beginning Monday, TechRec will open for a maximum of 6 patrons at one time.  In case you missed it, please see the attached email.  A workout reservation (limited to 50 minutes) can be scheduled here to help facilitate operations.  TechRec hours will be 9:00am – 9:00pm, Monday through Friday.  As you use TechRec, please assist us in meeting all of the requirements to keep TechRec open.

Please do your part to stop the spread; it’s on all of us.

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

Another week down – the weeks seem to be flying by, which is a good thing?  It is nice to see more students on campus this week as in person classes got underway.

The Oregon Health Authority reports the number of weekly COVID cases showed a 4% decline, but the number of deaths hit a weekly high (passing the previous pandemic high the prior week).  Additionally, the number of positive tests dropped to 5.9% for the week ending January 16. The number of people receiving vaccines across the state this week also increased over the past week.

COVID-19 Update

As of today,  10 KF students are in isolation  (an increase of 1 over last week).  The number of KF employees in isolation is 4 (no change from last week). The number of new COVID positive cases reported this week totals 3 (all 3 KF students). One student at the Portland-Metro campus is in isolation (down from two last week); the report indicates no students isolating at Chemeketa. The total number of reported cases since January 2 is 19 (up 3 from last week).

KF students wanting a COVID test will need to go through the drive-through site on El Dorado and identify yourself as an Oregon Tech student.  The KF COVID testing on campus will resume February 2 at an indoor location.

As the vaccine becomes more available and people are vaccinated, face coverings will still need to be worn and the other safety precautions still practiced.  As more information about vaccine accessibility is available, information will be shared regularly.

Reminders

Snow is in the forecast for Sunday and then Tuesday/Wednesday. Please remember that if the weather impacts campus operations, information about delays or closure will be communicated through the OIT Alert system and local media. If you have not updated our contact options in OIT Alert, please go here and follow the instructions. If an OIT-Alert is sent that a campus is closed, that means that all offices, activities and events on campus are cancelled. All in-person and remote courses will be cancelled, but students enrolled through Oregon Tech Online courses will continue unless otherwise notified by your professor. For KF students living in the residence halls information about any changes to meal times or procedures will come from Housing & Residence Life. Also, please allow more time when driving in winter conditions as arriving safely to your destination is most important.

Please do your part to stop the spread; it’s on all of us.

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

It’s mid-January but you would not know it by the weather! I hope you are enjoying the unseasonable warm days and getting outside some. I’m sure the winter weather will come (and stay) eventually.

I hope you all read the memo from President Naganathan which provided information about spring term. The plan for spring term is for classes to be offered the same as fall term for all locations. The schedule of classes will be out later this term with spring term registration which will begin February 15. Dr. Nagi also indicated spring term will begin on March 29 (no change to the academic calendar). It is now the time that many are making plans for spring break, March 20 – 28, please keep in mind that COVID-19 will still be prevalent (even with the availability of the vaccine) and consider staying local and not travel to other states or abroad.

COVID-19 update

As of today, 9 KF students are in isolation. The number of KF employees in isolation is 4. The number of new COVID positive cases reported this week totals 6 (5 KF students and 1 Portland-Metro student). Two students at the Portland-Metro campus are in isolation; the report indicates no students isolating at Chemeketa. The total number of reported cases since January 2 is 16.

Reminders

No classes on Monday as campus is closed in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In-person classes in KF start Tuesday. It will be nice to see you back on campus.

The KF Integrated Student Health Center is offering HIPAA-compliant Zoom and telephone appointments for counseling sessions. They are offering in-person medical appointments, and can also schedule telehealth appointments as well. PM counseling is available through Zoom and telephone appointments.

Please do your part to stop the spread; it’s on all of us.

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

As the first week of the new term concludes, I hope your new term of classes went well.

OHA reported for the week of December 28 to January 3 a 17% increase over the previous week which followed three consecutive weeks of declining cases.  Additionally, the percentage of positive cases increased to 7.5% (up from 6.3%). Next week will be the start of any surge due to the New Year’s holiday celebrations, with the number of positive cases anticipated to increase again.

COVID-19 update

Each weekly report starting with this one will provide numbers since January 2 (winter term start date for students moving back into KF campus housing). As of today,  20 KF students are in isolation.  The number of KF employees in isolation is 2. The number of positive cases reported this week totals 10 (9 KF students and 1 employee).

One student at the Portland-Metro campus and one student at the Chemeketa campus are in isolation.

KF students wanting a COVID test will need to go through the drive-through site on El Dorado and identify yourself as an Oregon Tech student.  The KF COVID testing on campus will resume February 2 at an indoor location.

Please be responsible for completing your daily health screening.  Students, please use the Oregon Tech app as this worked well last term in assisting students with symptoms and then notifying others of potential exposure which ultimately minimized the spread.  Anyone not well should stay home and seek direction from the appropriate healthcare provider.

Reminders

Next week all KF courses and labs are still remote.  In person classes will begin Tuesday, January 19 following the campus holiday on January 18 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Please continue to practice all COVID prevention measures regularly: properly wear a face covering inside and outside, maintain 6 feet between you and others, frequently wash your hands, regularly sanitize high touch surfaces and limit gathering socially with others.  Our decisions over the next two weeks are critical in how campus will operate when in person courses begin.  Please do your part to stop the spread.

If you have not travelled back from your break yet, please check road conditions and if conditions are bad, please wait until conditions improve.

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community Members,

As the New Year gets underway, winter break is winding down for everyone. Most of us are overjoyed to see 2020 end and are hopeful for a better 2021!

The last campus update on December 12 indicated the number of positive cases in Oregon continued to increase. OHA reports the week of December 21-27 (the latest weekly report) had a 22% decrease in positive cases, which marked the third consecutive week of declining numbers. This is good news but we are just now seeing the impact of the Christmas holiday and the result of travel and family gatherings. The New Year’s holiday impact will not be evident until approximately the second week of January, which is why we are starting winter term remotely in KF. Please continue to take appropriate steps to reduce the chance of exposure so that when we do return to in-person classes and activities, we will bring less COVID to campus.

COVID-19 update

During the winter break, reported cases of COVID exposure or positive tests were low. Only 10 positive cases were reported (8 KF students and 2 employees) and nine of those cases were due to exposures from a family member. We currently have three KF students, two Chemeketa students, and eight employees in isolation. It is imperative that everyone: students, faculty and staff complete the daily health screening. Please stay home if you have any COVID symptoms and contact the appropriate medical provider for assistance. Students with symptoms, have a possible exposure, or have tested positive, please call Student Health at 541-885-1800. Should you receive a call from Student Health or a member of the contact tracing team, please respond immediately so anyone at risk can be quickly identified and transmission to others can be minimized.

KF students wanting a COVID test will need to go through the drive-through site on El Dorado and identify yourself as an Oregon Tech student. The KF COVID testing on campus will resume February 2 at an indoor location.

Next week’s update will provide cases from the start of winter term on January 4.

Reminders

Students living on campus: please complete your screening PRIOR to returning to campus. Housing opens at noon on Saturday, January 2 and dining services will resume with dinner on Sunday, January 3. If your return date has changed, please email Housing at housing@oit.edu with your updated information.

As you return to the Klamath basin, please check the weather and road conditions as winter has arrived; take it slow so your return is without incident.

The first two weeks of KF winter term classes (labs and lectures) will all be remote. In person classes will being Tuesday, January 19 since Monday, January 18, is a campus holiday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. At the Portland Metro campus classes will follow the same format as for fall – lectures remote, labs in person.

Happy New Year and stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community Members,

Congrats to a completing the fall term (or almost as grades are being submitted) and thank you for doing your part to allow for continued services and minimizing the COVID spread in campus community.

Oregon’s number of positive cases continued to increase this week with all-time high daily counts. The total number of cases increased from 81,437 (1,003 deaths) on December 4 to 91,421 (1,138 deaths) yesterday. Some of this increase is a result of the Thanksgiving weekend and OHA is reporting the numbers are better than predicted as Oregonians changed plans and followed the Governor’s recommendations. We are still months away from a vaccine being available to the general public. Thus, it is imperative that we all continue to minimize close contact with others, keep social gatherings small, wear a face covering, and regularly wash hands.

This week’s COVID-19 numbers

Currently, 3 KF students are in isolation (none on campus) which is 15 less than last week. Additionally, 2 employees are in isolation (down from 7 last week). There are no reports of anyone in isolation at the PM campus or from Chemeketa.

This week there were 3 new positive KF students, bringing the total to 57 positive students since the start of fall term. Three new positive cases reported for employees, bring the total to 8 employees. One new positive cases reported from the PM campus and no new cases from Chemeketa.

The Integrated Student Health Center (ISHC) staff will be available throughout the winter break to support students with COVID-related issues (with the exception of Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1, when the university is closed). If you develop symptoms, receive a positive COVID test result, or have an exposure, please call ISHC at 541-885-1800.

Due to the surge of positive COVID-19 cases in the community, Klamath County Public Health (KCPH) has approved of and encouraged Oregon Tech to spearhead contact tracing for its own employees. Gaylyn Maurer, Director of the Integrated Student Health Center, will be taking the lead in this effort as she has been trained in this area and has worked closely with KCPH across the past 9 months facilitating contact tracing for students. Several other staff members will also complete the training in order to ensure efficient support for employees who may be directly impacted by COVID. Should you receive a call from Gaylyn or the contact tracing team, please keep in mind that the intention behind their efforts is to keep the campus community as safe as possible by quickly identifying anyone at risk for having been exposed to the virus and to keep those who are ill from transmitting it to others.

Reminders

The Oregon Tech Foundation scholarship application is now available (due March 1, but don’t wait to do it – winter break is a great time to write your essays).

KF students living on campus housing, please complete the survey from Mandi about your return date to housing. This information is really important for planning purposes. If your plans change after you complete the survey, that is fine – just let Housing know of your new return date (email Housing@oit.edu). Also, please watch for an email with the information about your health screening for your return to housing.

Access to KF campus buildings over the winter break is extremely limited. The only building open during the break is the CU which will be open Monday – Friday, 8am to 5pm, except for campus holidays (Dec 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1). Please call or email any office from which you need assistance rather than going to an office in person.

This reminder will continue to go out: the first two weeks of classes in KF will be remote (lecture classes and labs), with the term starting on January 4. The other campus locations will start winter term with the same operations as fall term. Please watch for additional emails about winter term over the winter break.

This weekly update will be the last one until January 2, but watch for emails over the break for important information from me and or other staff.

Winter arrived yesterday with a beautiful snow fall, so be careful on the roads throughout the season. Please have a safe and restful break!

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community,

As the Thanksgiving break approaches, I’m pleased to report that our COVID numbers are decreasing.  However, as we give thanks with family and friends, we all need to remain vigilant with practicing all COVID prevention measures. Most frequent transmission of COVID is with family and friends so please be careful as we don’t want to have another surge upon the return to campus and a busy end of term.

Please reflect on all that you are currently thankful for and share your thankfulness with others. If you get an opportunity to volunteer or assist others, or to pay it forward in some way, please do so.  I’m thankful that this fall has more students on our campuses with lots of energy and enthusiasm.  I’m also thankful that this week’s number are better than last week’s and the Thanksgiving break gives me a Saturday without sending out the weekly update (the next update will be sent December 4).

COVID numbers

Since last week’s report, 4 new positive cases were reported (3 KF students and 1 employee) which is down from the 15 new positive cases last week.

Currently in isolation/quarantine are 12 KF students (with an additional 25 waiting for test results), 2 PM students (down 4 from last week), 1 Chemeketa student (up from zero last week) and 4 employees (same as last week). Overall, the number of people in isolation/quarantine now is at 19 (down from 45). The 25 waiting for test results (down from 61last week) are not in isolation because they are vaccinated which follows the CDC guidance.

Reminders

Face coverings are required for everyone indoors unless actively eating. When you have a beverage, please remove your face covering to take a sip and then replace your face covering. Please be sure to wear your face covering properly (over both your nose and mouth). Reports of noncompliance to wear a face covering properly will be handled through the conduct process for students and staff.

Testing this week is suspended due to the Thanksgiving break. The next test due date is Tuesday, November 30 by noon.

Thank you for doing your part to minimize the spread of COVID across our campuses.

Happy Thanksgiving and stay well,

Erin

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community Members,

I hope this week’s update finds you well and enjoying the Thanksgiving weekend.

As Governor Brown’s state “freeze” ends on December 2, counties will be designated at one of four levels (low to extreme) with service and activities allowed based on designation. This system will allow for areas of the state to return to activities if the level of cases is lower, rather than the same guidance/requirements for the entire state. As county designations are determined/revised, University services and activities will be evaluated as our goal is to continue to do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19.

This week’s COVID-19 numbers

Currently, 33 KF students are in isolation (2 on campus) which is five less than last week. Additionally, 13 employees are in isolation (up from 9 last week). There are no reports of anyone in isolation at the PM campus or from Chemeketa.

This week there were 13 new positive KF students, bringing the total to 47 positive students since the start of fall term. No new positive cases reported for employees or from the PM campus or Chemeketa.

Reminders

As COVID-19 spread increases, everyone must continue to practice all the precautions regularly: properly wear a face covering inside and outside, maintain 6 feet between you and others, frequently wash your hands, and regularly sanitize high touch surfaces.

As the term winds down, good luck completing papers, projects, and exams (or grading everything). If you haven’t registered for winter term, please do so this week.

Friday is the last day withdraw from all classes this term.

Don’t let COVID fatigue or the stress of the end of the term get to you. Use your campus resources this week and next in order to finish strong.

Stay well,

Erin M. Foley, Ph.D.
Vice President & Dean of Students

Oregon Tech Community Members,

I can’t believe week 8 of fall term is over, but I’m thankfully the end of term is approaching. I’m disheartened to share this week’s update as it is not a good one. I’ll start with Governor Brown’s announcement yesterday of a “two week freeze” starting Wednesday (November 18) to December 2 to reduce the spread of COVID-19 across Oregon, which is a direct result of the skyrocketing number of cases this month. Oregon Tech will need to adjust in some areas, but classes will continue without any changes.

The two week freeze ordered by the Governor provides specific sector directives, some of which apply to Oregon Tech. The press conference from yesterday can be viewed here. Oregon Tech will take the following actions to comply with the two week freeze requirements:

  • TechRec (Student Rec Center) will close; gym access will be for instruction purposes only (guidance on athletics is forthcoming)
  • Bookstore will reduce capacity to 75%
  • Campus Dining will be 100% takeout; eating in the dining area will be discontinued
  • Campus activities will stop, including campus visits and on-campus interviews by search committees
  • Instruction will continue as planned (higher education instruction and research is excluded from this directive)

In addition to these specific actions, Oregon Tech encourages everyone to also follow Governor Brown’s directive on social gatherings: limit of 6 people total, from no more than two households (this means your household plus only one other) regardless of indoor or outdoor location. As Thanksgiving falls within this two week freeze, please reconsider your Thanksgiving plans and adjust to follow these social gathering guidelines. Students, please consider not traveling for Thanksgiving and staying local so that you reduce the risk of bring COVID back to campus. You do not want to spend the last two weeks in isolation/quarantine and be able to finish final exams.

Of course, whether you stay local or travel, adhering to our prevention measures (on and off campus) remain critical: properly wear a face covering inside and outside; maintain at least 6 feet of distance from others; wash your hands regularly (or use hand sanitizer); and frequently sanitize high touch surfaces. I know we are all tired of hearing this and even more tired of doing it, but we need to maintain our vigilance until the pandemic is behind us.

This week’s COVID-19 numbers

This week 13 students tested on campus (KF) bringing the total of students tested since September 16 to 153. Unfortunately, the total number of positive cases this week brought the total for fall term to 22 students (up from just 8 last week) and 2 employees (no new cases this week) at the KF campus. The Portland-Metro campus had two more students test positive, bringing the total positive cases to 3 (all students). No additional positive cases were reported from the Chemeketa program, keeping the total at 2 (both students).

We also have a many individuals in isolation this week, which will likely contribute to more positive cases in the coming week. Last week 29 KF students were isolating and now we have 23 (11 in isolation on campus) as well as 4 employees in isolation. Also, 26 PM students are in isolation currently and one student at Chemeketa is in isolation.

It is evident that the increase in positive cases and the need to isolate individuals is directly linked to letting our guards down and interacting with others that are considered “safe” when in fact they are not. Please think about your activities on and off campus. The ability to get individuals into isolation quickly is certainly making a positive difference in controlling the spread in our community .If you receive a phone call from Student Health or a public health official, please answer (or return the call) as they are calling to give you important information. Your timely response is needed and greatly appreciated.

Reminders

Registration for winter term is underway. Be sure to meet with your academic advisor and register when it is your time. Don’t put it off as the end of the term will be very busy and you don’t want to forget to do it!

Please continue to practice our COVID-19 prevention measures on AND off campus:

  • Properly wear a face covering inside and outside
  • Maintain at least 6 feet between you and others
  • Wash your hands frequently (or use hand sanitizer of 60% alcohol or more)
  • Sanitize high touch surfaces frequently, and
  • Please do not come to campus if you are sick!

As winter weather is now here, please slow down and be safe on the roads (and even walking on slick surfaces).

Stay well,

Oregon Tech Community Members,

Another week of the term is behind us and it is now November. Unfortunately, what is not behind us is COVID-19. This week saw more cases across the state, our counties and even on campus. It is clear the Halloween activities, specifically social gatherings without physical distancing and face coverings, played a role in this week’s numbers. As I look back to mid-September and now, Klamath County’s number of COVID-19 cases increased from 260 (on September 16) to 463 (as of yesterday). Oregon also saw its highest daily count of 805 on Thursday. The recent increased spread is due to small, informal social gatherings according to OHA. As a reminder as to how we can Stop the Spread, please see the attached.

This week’s COVID-19 numbers

Last week we had 12 KF students isolating due to either direct contact with a COVID-19 person or due to symptoms. This week we have 29 KF students isolating (6 in isolation on campus). One KF employee is currently isolating (due to symptoms).

Eleven students tested this week on campus, bringing the total tested on campus to 140 students. The total number of positive cases on the KF campus increased by 4 (all students) this week for an overall total of 10 cases (8 students and 2 employees) at the KF campus.

At the PM campus one student reported positive this week, the first PM case since fall term started. Two PM students are currently in isolation.

Two students in an Oregon Tech academic program at the Chemeketa Community College tested positive this week.

If you receive a phone call from Student Health or a public health official, please answer (or return the call) as they are calling to give you important information. Your timely response is needed and greatly appreciated.

Reminders

Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11. As this is a recognized campus holiday, campus is closed and classes do not meet. If you are a veteran, thank you for your service! Please be sure to thank a veteran on Wednesday.

Oregon Tech community members,

We are now in the downward slide to the end of the term with week 6 now completed; time is really flying. However, if you have watched the news this week, the COVID-19 pandemic, unfortunately, is not on a downward trajectory. Cases have increased across the country as well as in Oregon; in the state we had the highest case count yesterday (Friday at 600) since the start of the pandemic. Oregon Health Authority’s stated on 10/28 that the incidence of reported infection has been highest in persons 20–49 years of age, who account for 39% of Oregon’s population and 56% of reported cases. The current increase in cases means we must continue to practice all prevention measures on and off campus to reduce the spread. Be sure to maintain 6 feet, properly wear a face covering, keep washing your hands regularly, and clean high touch surfaces often. Even if you are spending time with someone you know (and think they are healthy), it is in your best interest to keep your distance as they could be an asymptomatic carrier. Continue to be vigilant to remain healthy! And remember: If you have symptoms of COVID-19 or the flu (or not feeling 100%), please STAY home.

This week’s COVID-19 numbers:

Last week we had a significant number of students in isolation due to possible exposure to a COVID-positive person. Those exposed have tested negative (pending one that was retested this week due to symptoms). At this time we have 12 KF students isolating due to either direct contact with a COVID-19 person or due to symptoms (only one is isolating in campus housing).

Eight students tested this week on campus, bringing the total tested on campus to 129 students. Of those 129, the number testing positive remains at one. Since September 16 in Klamath Falls, we have had 119 students instructed to isolate (up from 104 reported last week) with 12 students currently in isolation. The total number of positive cases on the KF campus increased by 1 (an employee) this week for an overall total of 6 cases at the KF campus. The employee is recovering at home. In addition to the students in isolation, one KF employee is currently isolating (due to symptoms).

At the PM campus there are zero employees are isolating. Portland Metro also does not have any students isolating currently and there are no reported positive cases.

If you receive a phone call from Student Health or a public health official, please answer (or return the call) as they are calling to give you important information. Your timely response is needed and greatly appreciated.

Reminders

If you missed the email on Tuesday about the new campus Face Covering Requirement, please see the attachment and note that face shields are not allowed as a face covering unless a medical exemption is approved. Neck gaiters are also not allowed on campus. If you have not received your Oregon Tech branded face coverings, please go to the Student Affairs office (CU 217) to pick them up or go to the CIC at the PM campus.

The last day to withdraw from a single class is Friday, November 6. A complete withdrawal (dropping all classes) can be done through Friday, December 4.

Stay safe this Halloween weekend and don’t forget to set your clocks back tonight!

Oregon Tech community members,

In order to keep campus informed and to provide some reminders, here is this week’s COVID-19 email.

COVID flowchart for students

Daily Screenings (this can’t be re-iterated enough)

Daily health screenings are imperative to conduct by everyone. Students should use the OT app and follow the instructions if you get a red health pass. Employees also need to assess your health prior to coming to campus. If you don’t feel well or if you have symptoms or have a direct exposure to someone that is COVID-19 positive, do not come to campus. Students should call Student Health at 541-885-1800 and employees should contact the Office of Human Resources. As a reminder, please see the attached flowcharts (one for students and one for employees); post this somewhere that you will see it every day as a reminder to do your daily health screening.

Face Covering Requirement

New guidance from the state this week prohibits the use of face shields as an appropriate face covering, unless limited circumstances exist. More information about this change and other guidance around face coverings will be sent out early next week.

It is appropriate to remove your face covering in order to eat or drink but it is not appropriate to leave your face covering off for extended time. When you finish eating, please put your face covering back in place over both your nose and mouth. Likewise, after you take a drink from your beverage, put your face covering back on properly. If you are reminded by someone to put your face covering back on, please be respectful and replace your face covering over your nose and mouth. If you see someone without a properly placed face covering, please remind them of the face covering requirement. We all have a role in doing what’s required, especially with face coverings and physical distancing, and gently reminding one another is also everyone’s responsibility.

This week’s COVID-19 numbers

We had a significant increase in the number of KF students and employees in isolation this week as a result of a potential exposure because a person came to campus with symptoms and then tested positive. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 or the flu (or not feeling 100%), please STAY home. Forty-one (41) students tested this week on campus, bringing the total tested on campus to 121 students. Of those 121, the number testing positive remains at one. Since September 16 in Klamath Falls, we have had 104 students instructed to isolate (up from 49 reported last week) with 52 students currently in isolation (49 of which due to the possible exposure). The total number of positive cases on the KF campus increased by 1 (an employee) this week for an overall total of 5 cases at the KF campus. All five have now recovered.

In addition to the students in isolation, six employees in KF are currently isolating (2 due to symptoms and 4 due to possible exposure). At the PM campus there are zero employees are isolating. Portland Metro also does not have any students isolating currently and there are no reported positive cases.

Other Reminders

KF testing for students: Tuesdays and Wednesday, noon – 2:00pm (through November 25), at the Choose Well tent by Snell Hall.

Flu season is here now. Please consider getting a flu shot this year. In Klamath Falls, flu shots are available at Student Health on Wednesdays and Fridays between 8:00am and noon by appointment only. Portland-Metro has 12 pharmacies within 5 miles of campus offering free flu shots.

It is important to address this stress: be good to yourself; take some time to enjoy the nice weather by taking a walk or run; call someone that you haven’t connected with due to the pandemic; and if you need assistance, use your resources. Students, counseling staff is available in Klamath Falls (541-885-1800) and in Portland (503-821-1313) with remote appointments. Employees, don’t forget about our EAP program.

With the completion of week 4, the middle of the term is approaching which brings mid-term exams and other stressors. Please acknowledge that school (and work) alone is very stressful, but add even more stress due to operating under all the requirements and limitations of a pandemic and the result is MAJOR stress for the majority of us. It is important to address this stress: be good to yourself; take some time to enjoy the nice weather by taking a walk or run; call someone that you haven’t connected with due to the pandemic; and if you need assistance, use your resources. This week’s COVID-19 numbers

Six more students tested this week on campus bringing the total tested to 80 students. Of those 80, the number testing positive remains at one. Since September 16 in Klamath Falls, we have had 49 students instructed to isolate (up from 40 reported last week) with only 4 students currently in isolation. The total of positive cases on the KF campus increased by 1 this week a total now of 4 cases. As always, our thoughts are with these students and we are certainly hoping for their speedy recovery.

One employee in KF is currently isolating due to symptoms (zero employees isolating at the PM campus). Portland Metro does not have any students isolating currently and there no reported positive cases.

New item

On a different note, this past Thursday was international ShakeOut 2020: Drop, Cover and Hold On! day. This awareness program is about what you should do to protect yourself during an earthquake. With all the craziness of 2020, we should all know what to do during an earthquake: drop onto your hands and knees, crawl to get under a desk/table and hold on to it securely. If getting under a desk/table is unavailable, move against an interior wall that does not have objects on the wall above you (beware of objects around you that can fall on you). If you are outdoors, avoid trees, buildings, signs or other objects that can fall on you. For more information and preparedness checklist go here.

Get out and enjoy the great weather this weekend! Don’t forget to practice all of the COVID-19 prevention measures both on- and off-campus, and indoors or outdoors: physical distancing of 6ft or more, wear a face covering, and wash your hands and high touch surfaces regularly!

Stay well,

Oregon Tech community members,

In order to keep campus informed and to provide some reminders, here is this week’s COVID-19 email.

First, on-site testing in Klamath Falls was extended this week and will continue through November 25, 2020. Testing is available Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 2:00pm each day at the Choose Well tent near Snell Hall. This is free and voluntary for students in KF. The testing location for faculty and staff is the drive-through site on Eldorado.

Second is the COVID-19 weekly update. Six students tested this week on campus bringing the total tested to 74 students. Of those 74, the number testing positive remains at one. Since September 16 in Klamath Falls, we have had 40 students instructed to isolate (up from 23 reported last week) with 11 students currently in isolation. The total of positive cases on the KF campus remains at 3. Our thoughts are with these students and we are certainly hoping for their speedy recovery.

One employee in KF is currently isolating due to symptoms (zero employees isolating at the PM campus). Portland Metro has two students isolating currently and no reported positive cases.

Campus officials continue to work in close coordination with local public health officials. Please follow any instructions provided by Student Health or public health staff members if you are contacted.

On campus, we are doing a great job but also need to practice all of the prevention measures off campus as well. The most important prevention measure is maintaining at least 6 feet physical distance followed by properly wearing face coverings and washing hands regularly (or using hand sanitizer which is available in classrooms/labs and many other locations around campus). It is also important for all community members to continue to do their daily health screenings and abide by our community standards. If you are sick, please stay home and take appropriate action. If you have direct contact with someone that has COVID-19 or you have symptoms of COVID-19, please isolate and call Student Health at 541-885-1800 (students or employees at any campus location) for assistance.

The Oregon Health Authority reported that Thursday marked the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Oregon with 484 new cases. Here is the statement from OHA: “Over the past few weeks, Oregon has seen a steady rise in daily cases. Sadly, today we see the highest number of COVID-19 cases reported in Oregon. During a media briefing today, Deputy State Health Officer and State Epidemiologist Dr. Tom Jeanne said that cases have been caused by infections passed along at social gatherings, workplaces and long-term care facilities. This increase in cases has reversed the progress we made in the late summer, and our most recent modeling shows the virus is spreading more rapidly just as we enter the fall and winter when Oregonians will spend more time indoors. That means that COVID-19 is in communities across Oregon. When the virus is in the community, it will spread if people don’t take precautions. If people don’t wear masks and socialize frequently with people outside their households and gather in groups, the virus will enter our workplaces and nursing homes. Dr. Jeanne reminds us: Every one of us needs to continue to take this threat seriously. The choices we make affect not only us and our families but our neighbors, our communities and the most vulnerable people among us. You have worked hard to limit the spread of COVID-19. Keep it up: Wear face coverings, keep physically distant, frequently wash your hands, and avoid gathering in groups.”

The number of positive cases in Klamath County saw an increase this week so, again, behaviors off campus are just as important as on campus. Remaining vigilant on and off campus is critical so please continue to physical distance, wear your face covering properly, wash your hands regularly, keep your spaces clean, and minimize attendance at social gatherings. We want to maintain our current operations so we all need to continue to do our part every day.

Please continue to take care of yourself and one another!
