Taylor Munson

Student, Class of 2017
Major(s): Dental Hygiene
Hometown: Molalla, Oregon

Why did you choose Oregon Tech?

From the time I completed a career project in fourth grade, I’ve known that I wanted to become a Dental Hygienist, and as time went on I chose to pursue my Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Dental Hygiene. In Oregon, I learned there are two universities that offer this degree, and after doing my research and visiting the campus, I knew that Oregon Tech was the right fit for me personally and educationally.

What do you like most about your major?

I love being able to help and motivate people to achieve oral health. I also love the numerous pathways in which this career can take me including dental hygiene clinician, educator, researcher, administrator/manager, and advocate for the profession.

What would be your dream job in your major?

My dream job in dental hygiene would be to work in a private family practice in which I could provide preventative dental services to those in my community and create strong relationships between my fellow dental professionals and patients.

What’s your favorite thing to do off campus?

The Klamath Falls area is an outdoors enthusiast’s dream, and I enjoyed spending my down time hiking, running, and playing tennis at Moore Park with friends and visiting family.

What’s your most memorable moment within your school career?

My most memorable moment was when I saw my first patient sophomore year. I remember I was so nervous and hoped I could remember everything I needed to do. I fumbled my way through it and through my mistakes and struggles, I was able to learn and grow as a dental hygiene student. It is amazing to see the knowledge and skill I have gained and how far I have come in my education, as I prepare to become a Registered Dental Hygienist.

What internships did you participate in during your time at Oregon Tech? Did you gain valuable experience from them?

During senior year, I was able to participate in off-campus clinical rotations at the Veterans Administration in White City, Plum Ridge Marquis, Klamath Open Door, and Klamath Tribal Health. At these locations, I was able to take the skills I had learned in school and put them into practice, providing oral cancer screenings, dental cleanings, x-rays, and dental hygiene education for patients.

Do you have employment/graduate school plans for after graduation?

After graduation, I am moving to Santa Barbara, CA to begin a new chapter in my life with my fiancé’ (also an Oregon Tech Alumni). We will be planning our wedding and at the same time, I will be completing board licensing in Oregon and California, to begin a new career practicing Dental Hygiene.
