The U.S. News list of regional Colleges in the West is comprised of the top baccalaureate colleges across Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. According to U.S. News, the overall university rankings, which have been published annually since 1983, are based on multiple criteria, including graduation and retention rates, graduation rate performance, social mobility, faculty resources, peer opinion, student excellence, financial resources, and alumni giving. The publication assigns the greatest weight to student outcomes, particularly assessing a university's ability to retain and graduate students within six years.

As for the rankings of undergraduate engineering programs, they are solely determined by peer assessment surveys. To be featured in this assessment, an institution must have an undergraduate engineering program accredited by ABET, the organization responsible for accrediting college and university programs. Oregon Tech also garners recognition as a top performer in advancing social mobility by enrolling and successfully graduating a significant number of disadvantaged students who have been awarded Pell Grants.
