A proposed new medical school in rural Oregon could help address the state's ongoing physician shortage, especially in underserved communities far from urban centers. A new initiative aims to change that by establishing Oregon's second public medical school in Klamath Falls. The plan is being led by the Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech), which has long trained healthcare professionals from dental hygienists and physical therapists. More than half of current graduates are trained in some way to enter the health care profession. "We have the science base. We're obviously in rural Oregon, and research shows that providers who train in rural areas are five times more likely to stay," said Gaylyn Maurer, executive director of health and wellness at Oregon Tech.
