Rooms 404 and 408 both offer a dedicated workspace for working on student’s circuit designs. Room 404 is an open lab to students who have completed the Circuits I course. Both rooms offers a variety of equipment, including; oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, and an assortment of electronic components. Many classes are held in these rooms so make sure that room is available before setting up your circuits.
Digital Oscilloscopes offer students a chance to analyze and measure the electrical signal that is being output by their circuit. Digital oscilloscopes offer a variety of functions, including; measurement of signal peaks, frequency readings, storage of data, and an optical display that shows the signal in real time. These devices are expensive and require a formal training session before students are allowed to work on them freely. Most students will go through this training while taking Circuits or by reaching out to a professor.
Power Supplies allow the user to set a specific voltage and current that can be used to power student components. The DC power output is limited to a single channel, 96 Watt power supply that is usually coupled with a more advanced function generator. Function generators then allow you to customize this signal that will simulate real world conditions for your circuitry.
Function Generators provide a customized signal output and is often coupled with a DC power supply. These devices allow the user to output a specific signal (custom voltage, current, and frequency) and waveform (AC sine wave, DC, Sawtooth, Square). Similar to oscilloscopes, formal training is needed before students are allowed to work unsupervised with these devices. If you wish to learn more, please contact lab staff.
