Oregon Tech hosted the 2025 Regional Math Contests on April 15. The competition was open to high school students currently enrolled in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus in Klamath and Lake Counties.
For over 35 years, the Oregon Tech Mathematics department has sponsored this event during Math Awareness Month each April to engage more high school students in mathematics.
This year, 90 high school students and their math instructors from Lakeview High School, Klamath Union High School, and Crosspoint Christian School came to Oregon Tech for the competition.
Students compete in two sections of the event: Oregon Tech math contests and state-level exams. The faculty in the Oregon Tech Mathematics department participates in this event by administering tests, judging the competition, and providing administrative support.
Professor of Mathematics, Randall Paul, Ph.D., was the keynote speaker. His lecture was titled “Harmonic Sets in Music.” According to Paul, “Given three points on a line, we may construct a fourth point using a simple geometric process involving only a pencil and a straight-edge. These four points together are called a harmonic set. But why are they called ‘harmonic’?” In his address, he showed how the points of a harmonic set correspond to the lengths of the strings of a violin so that, when played, they produce a harmonic musical chord.
Oregon Tech’s Office of the President and Educational Partnerships and Outreach sponsor the event.
