The College Board is made up of over 6,000 of the world’s leading educational institutions and is dedicated to promoting excellence and equity in education. The not-for-profit organization helps more than 7 million students prepare for a successful transition to college through programs and services in college readiness and college success — including the SAT and the Advanced Placement Program. The organization also serves the education community through research and advocacy on behalf of students, educators and schools.
As part of a team including faculty from across the country, Dr. Madden’s seven- to nine-month commitment with the committee will consist of developing a new AP U.S. History scoring guide, developing teacher resources, and creating sample syllabi and training documents.
Dr. Madden has been a consultant for AP U.S. History since 2007 and was selected by the College Board due to his years of service as a rater of AP U.S. History syllabi from high school faculty to ensure that they align with AP course standards.
“This is an exciting opportunity to influence the teaching of U.S. History on a national level and I am looking forward to sharing my thoughts and experience with the team,” shared Dr. Madden.
Dr. Madden has worked at Oregon Tech for nine years as a member of the social science faculty and is the general education coordinator for Oregon Tech’s Portland-Metro campus. Among the classes he teachers are Globalization and the Pacific Northwest, Introduction to Film and U.S. History Survey courses. He is also the author of a book on the history of Alaska. Dr. Madden has his Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire in American History, a master's degree from University of Vermont and a bachelor's degree from University of California – Davis.
