In recent years, the Commission on College Teaching has supported the modification of classroom spaces to meet faculty preferences and support student learning. Below are several classrooms on the Klamath Falls campus which have been configured with group seating, in order to support faculty who are interested in using active-learning and group-based pedagogies in their classes. You can request these rooms for your courses via your scheduling coordinator during each term's course scheduling process.
Contact travis.lund@oit.edu with any questions about the rooms, or for assistance with the scheduling process.
Group-Seating Classrooms
Whiteboard Equipment
In most group seating rooms, you will find a rack of individual whiteboards, pens, cleaning cloths and cleaner for student use. The pens are refillable; please do not throw them away. In some cases, there may be enough boards for every student to have one. In other cases, students may have to share in pairs or groups.
There are a variety of purposes!
- To allow student responses to be large enough for you to read quickly as you go around the room.
- For students to write responses that they can hold up for you and/or the rest of the class to see.
- For one student to record responses or information that the group is supposed to be creating or gathering together.
- When doing something sequential, like solving a math equation or discussing a linear process, you can have one student write the equation or a starting point, then pass the board off to another student who provides the first step, then passes off to someone else who then provides the second step, and so on. If a student is passed the board and feels that there has been an error in a prior step, they can make a change instead of adding a step.
We are confident that you will find times during instruction that this Whiteboard Equipment is very useful to you and students. Please share your creative ideas and teaching methods with us! Contact: Travis.Lund@oit.edu
In addition, a set of 24 Whiteboards is available to check out from CCT for use in other classrooms. Reach out for more information to reserve this set. Contact: Travis.Lund@oit.edu
