Does my student have to take a Placement Test?

Placement guidelines are used to identify which courses students should take first. These guidelines help prevent students from enrolling in courses which are either too difficult or too easy. Oregon Tech offers placement for math, writing, and anatomy/physiology (format varies by test).

Oregon Tech's Student Success Plan includes special learning communities and seminars to help smooth your student’s transition to university life and to ensure his or her academic and personal success; tutoring, mentoring, networking and other forms of assistance are available to students through the following services:

  • Counseling Services
    Counselors are available to discuss personal and academic concerns, to help students through difficulties or to make referrals, when necessary, to community resources. All sessions are confidential and free of charge as part of the Student Health Fee.
  • Career Services
    Career Services offers career advising, resume writing and job interviewing workshops, job search assistance, Career Fairs and job listings.
  • Services for Students with Disabilities
    Disability Services coordinates academic, housing and program services accommodations for students with documented physical, learning, sensory, psychiatric and other disabilities.
  • Tech Opportunities Program (TOP)
    TOP is a federally funded (TRIO: Student Support Services) academic support program designed to assist highly motivated students who are also low-income, first-generation or disabled.
  • Free Tutoring is Available in All Subjects

    Peer Tutoring offers in-person and 24/7 virtual tutoring to support your courses and supplement your learning experience for students at ALL campuses. For classes that we know are very challenging, your student may also have access to a "Supplemental Instructor", who works with the professor to provide additional study sessions and help with the course content. 

Portland-Metro Student Services provides programs and services students need to achieve academic, personal and professional goals. Our programs and services are designed to provide academic support, enhance personal wellness, develop leadership and communication skills and promote a strong sense of community.

Each major has the opportunity to participate in an externship. Externship: The student is attending Oregon Tech, taking courses online or at a different campus and receiving credit for externship experience.

  • Mechanical engineering students have the opportunity to participate in MECOP which is two 6-month paid internships. Students participating in MECOP take 6-months to a year off from school to participate.

Students at Oregon Tech have unlimited access to the on-campus Career Services department. Career Services offers assistance in finding jobs both on and off campus.

The Department of Student Involvement & Belonging (SIB) is "Where Students Connect!"

We promote the holistic growth and development of Oregon Tech students through involvement and support. We create a community where all feel a sense of belonging. SIB provides opportunities for student engagement that is both beyond and interconnected with the academic experience.

  • New Student Programs: Orientation S.O.A.R.-ing Into Success, and Week of Welcome (WOW) program at the beginning of academic year.
  • Get Involved: Over 60 Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) to enhance your Oregon Tech experience and make friends.
  • Leading Change: Opportunities to fine tune leadership and cultural competency skills while at Oregon Tech, and prepare for your industry-specific career as a marketable leader.
  • Give Back: Community service offerings as a Volunteer Owl to support local and campus partner communities.
  • Lean In & Stretch: Opportunities to step away from the familiar, try new ideas, experience new cultures, and learn from people different from yourself with Diversity & Belonging programs, International Student Services, and Veteran Student Services.
  • Student Resources: Connecting students with local, community-based support services in order to meet their basic needs with regards to financial instability, food-insecurity, housing needs locally, learning about navigating and applying to local, state, and federal need programs towards personal enrichment and student success. Campus-based programs for ALL students to benefit from include: Bird Feeder student food pantry, Owl Feathers Exchange clothing closet, Book Depot textbook recycling program.

No, freshman are not required to live on campus. However, many new students find on-campus housing is the best way for to get involved in campus activities, meet new people, and stay ahead in classes.

Oregon Tech's Housing & Residence Life department describes many benefits of living on campus.

On-campus housing is only available at the Klamath Falls campus.

Students may select from two options for on campus housing:

  1. Residence Hall. The Residence Hall offers community style living with single or double rooms. In addition, first year students can request to be in the FYE (First Year Experience) wing for students who are looking to live with other first year students and participate in events and activities designed to enhance the first year college experience.
  2. The Village apartments offer apartment style living. Each apartment has 3-5 bedrooms, 1-2 bathrooms, and a shared living room and kitchen area.

On-campus housing is only available at the Klamath Falls campus.

Students are not required to live in on-campus housing, but many students find living on campus is the best way to meet new friends, get involved in campus life, and avoid the complications of off-campus housing. The Residence Hall and the Village are only minutes from the College Union building, classrooms/labs, the Learning Resource Center, Campus Dining, and the other resources students use on a daily basis. The Oregon Tech Registrar’s Office would like to introduce Proxy Access! This service allows you to give someone (usually a parent, guardian, or spouse) read-only access to designated areas of your student information, including:

  • Transcripts
  • Tax information

You maintain complete control over your proxy relationships. You are able to set them up, reset their passwords, change or delete their access, and send them messages detailing the access they have been given.

To add a proxy, go to TECHstudent click on Update Personal/Proxy Information>Proxy Management. Then select add new or click on a current Proxy.

Proxy Access Instructions

  1. Access TECHstudent
  2. Click on Update Personal/Proxy Information
  3. Click on Add New
  4. Fill out the new proxy information, full name and email address
  5. Click Submit

An email is now sent which includes a link is sent to the person that was set up as a proxy. The new guest user must log in to validate their email address, create their own pin, and fill out their personal information. If the student changes their mind and the proxy has not validated their email address, they can delete the proxy from the system right away. Otherwise, the student will need to wait 24 hours to delete the proxy.

  1. Click on the edit icon under the entry that was just created to expand the section
  2. Select Guest User as Thirdparty as the relationship
  3. Fill out a description that is meaningful to you
  4. Choose a passphrase (secret password for the proxy to use)
  5. Check the authorizations box and select what you would like to Proxy to be able to access below
  6. Select Submit

An email is now sent notifying the guest user that he/she has been authorized to see pages and gives them a new URL to log in and see the pages. They will be sent a temporary pin for their first login and then will need to select their own pin. The guest user will use their email address and pin they created to gain access to the proxy pages.

If the proxy locks themselves out, they can request a pin reset by entering their email address and clicking “forgot pin”. The system will then automatically send an email with the pin verification link and new pin. The student also has the capability to reset the proxy’s pin. When the student clicks reset pin in the Proxy Menu, an email is sent to the proxy with the verification link and pin and a copy of this email is sent to the student. Oregon Tech cannot remove, edit, or reset pins for Proxy's that can only be done by the student.

When a proxy calls Oregon Tech, the office will validate the passphrase and authorization given by the student.

Release of student records at Oregon Institute of Technology is bound by the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Oregon Revised Statutes, and Oregon Administrative Rules. FERPA restricts the information the university can share with students, individuals (including parents), and entities outside Oregon Tech, unless specifically authorized in writing by the student. Students may obtain file authorization/disclosure forms from the Registrar's Office.

However, FERPA allows an institution to define "directory information" that can be released. Consent from a student is not generally required for the release of directory information and it may be viewed and released to the public, unless the student has placed a confidentiality restriction on its release.

Oregon Tech designates the following items as Directory Information:
  • Current address
  • Student name
  • Current telephone number
  • Dates of attendance
  • Classification (year in school)
  • Major field of study
  • Most recent previous school attended
  • Degrees and awards received (including dates)
  • Hometown
  • Past and present participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • And for members of athletic teams: age, height and weight.

FERPA

Student records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal regulation which assigns rights to students and responsibilities to educational institutions regarding students’ education records. The Act governs the maintenance and release of information from those records.

  • All students have the right to review their educational records, to request amendment of records, to consent to disclosures or personally identifiable information, and to file complaints with the U.S. Department of Education
  • Students should contact the Oregon Tech Registrar’s Office for reviewing educational records and requesting amendment of records

Update Emergency Contact Information Regularly

Oregon Tech uses an electronic delivery system to inform the community of weather delays/ closure, earthquake, fire or other emergencies. Students should add their contact information in TECHweb (login required).

In the event of an emergency, a primary phone number and Oregon Tech e-mail will be used to contact you. Additional contact methods can be added:

  • Cell phone
  • Secondary e-mail address
  • Alternate phone

Students may also contact information for parents, spouses or those whom they would like to be contacted in case of a campus emergency.
